Cue the orange lights and Thursday nights, because the Europa League is back in action this week. Now, we are in the business end of the competition as only eight teams remain in UEFA’s little brother tournament. Arguably the best and most level match-up at this stage is between RB Leipzig and Atalanta.

Firstly, both of these sides are grappling for European spots in their domestic leagues. Additionally, both Leipzig and Atalanta faced tough tests at the weekend, squaring off against Borussia Dortmund and Napoli, respectively.

RB Leipzig have one more rest day in their schedule, but we still should expect rotation and some fatigue from both teams. They do not necessarily have the same depth as other European squads, which could make this first leg a bit more cagey than we are anticipating.

Merih Demiral Set to Return for La Dea

Nonetheless, while goals are forecasted, a major defensive piece is coming back into the fold for Atalanta. In fact, it has been reported that Merih Demiral has trained alone ahead of this match and is available for selection against RB Leipzig. This ex-Juventus talent might not jump off the page for some people, but all you have to do is watch Atalanta’s last match vs Napoli to comprehend his on-pitch presence.

Moreover, it was Demiral’s absence in the match this past weekend that was glaring. Atalanta lost that match to Napoi by a score of 3-1, despite outshooting them 19-6, putting together 100 more passes and winning eight more corners. One of Napoli’s goals came from a penalty, one from a set-piece and the final blow came from horrific defensive spacing and cover.

RB Leipzig vs Atalanta European Play Statistics

Atalanta
2.50 Goals per game 2.10
1.93 Expected goals per game 1.29
2.13 Goals allowed per game 1.60

Conversely, having Demiral back in the lineup should help mend these problems for Gian Piero Gasperini’s side. The 24-year-old has been a colossus this season, winning an astounding 4.72 aerial duels per ninety minutes.

Furthermore, Atalanta will also have the services of Duvan Zapata back in the lineup as he missed the Napoli match due to suspension. The combination of him and Ruslan Malinovskyi up top could cause havoc for any team in Europe.

Domenico Tedesco’s Influence So Far

It goes without saying that RB Leipzig are a changed side under Domenico Tedesco. This side struggled immensely under Jesse Marsch at the start of the year, and rightfully so given the key pieces they lost.

Regardless, since his appointment, Die Rotten Bullen has only lost two matches and conceded four draws in 18 games. On top of this, Christopher Nkunku has had a breakout year as one of Europe’s top offensive talents. His 44 goal involvements this season are a reason for Atalanta to be nervous in this match.

Besides that, RB Leipzig are also on a run of great form defensively. They have only let in three goals in their last six matches with Willi Orban and Peter Gulacsi holding down the spine. All in all, these factors are why RB Leipzig holds the second-best odds to win the Europa League odds at +333.

RB Leipzig vs Atalanta Best Bet

Overall, the best bet for this match is the Atalanta draw no bet (DNB) with odds of +235. This means you would win your bet if Atalanta wins, and receive a refund if they were to draw. First legs can always be a bit conservative, and with the pieces, Atalanta have possibly coming back, it is hard to see Leipzig having such an overstated advantage.

Pick: Atalanta DNB (+235)
