Roma vs Napoli Prediction

Seven wins from their opening ten league games have left Jose Mourinho’s men in good shape – in fourth place and just four points adrift of leaders, Roma. Crucially for them, they are also, as things stand, a point ahead of their city rivals, Lazio.

They come into this off the back of three straight Serie A wins and if they can make it four in a row that will be a first in the Mourinho era. They warmed up nicely for this clash with the league leaders by winning 1-0 away to Sampdoria on Monday, with captain Lorenzo Pellegrini scoring the only goal.

Poor Record Against Top Four for Napoli

But in order to turn this good start into a bona fide Scudetto challenge, Roma will need to start beating teams in the top four of Serie A. Incredibly, they have gone 12 games against top-four opposition without winning – their last win coming back in November 2019 – and, just as importantly, they have only beaten Roma once in their last eight meetings.

Napoli On Fire

It’s been a flying start to the campaign for Napoli both domestically and in Europe. Off the back of ten straight wins, they are top of both Serie A and UEFA Champions League Group A and look unbeatable right now. Not since their glory days of the mid-1980s have they won 11 in a row, so a win here would be record-breaking.

Even when not playing well, the Neapolitans are finding ways to win games, as evidenced last weekend when they had to dig in to grind out a narrow 3-2 home win over Bologna.

The Scudetto In Spallettis Sights

Luciano Spalletti has overseen massive changes at the club since his arrival, and starting in the second half of last season their form has been outstanding. This season has been a continuation of how they ended the 2021-22 campaign, and they now look capable of lifting the Scudetto once again.

With Liverpool and Atalanta to come in the next couple of weeks, this is a crucial period as they look to consolidate their position ahead of the World Cup break.

Roma vs Napoli Team Lineups and Injuries

Roma Projected Lineup: Patricio, Mancini, Smalling, Ibanez, Karsdorp, Cristante, Matic, Spinazzola, Pellegrini, Zaniolo, Abraham.

Injuries & absences: Rrahmami.

Napoli Projected Lineup: Meret, Di Lorenzo, Kim, Jesus, Rui, Ndombele, Lobotka, Zielinski, Lozano, Osimhen, Kvaratskhelia.

Injuries & absences: Dybala, Celik, Kumbulla, Wijnaldum.

Roma vs Napoli Picks

Mourinho will have his men fired up for this one, especially given their terrible record against opposition who are in the top four, but Napoli are full of confidence and with good reason.

With the visitors in plus money, there’s no doubt where the value lies.

Picks: Napoli to win (+138)
