The verdict of their coach Milena Bertolini was that the team was “fragile mentally.”
The South African team is still looking for its first-ever win at a World Cup. Moreover, Italy is hoping for a second consecutive advance to the knockout stages.
In 2019 it won its group and then reached the last eight where it was beaten 2-0 by the Netherlands.
FIFA places the Italian side 16th in its world rankings. South Africa is in the 54th spot.
