Costa Rica will be a huge favorite when it seeks its second win at the 2021 Gold Cup against Suriname in Florida on Friday.

In Group C, the Costa Ricans sat on top of the four-team table after a 3-1 opening win against Guadeloupe.

Suriname, meanwhile, was in the bottom spot following a 2-0 defeat by Jamaica.

Historically, Costa Rica is the most successful football nation in Central America. It has reached five World Cup finals tournaments – and achieved a quarterfinal place in 2014.

It is the third favorite to win the Gold Cup at +1200 with DraftKings behind favorite Mexico and the second-rated USA.

But Suriname is among the lengthy outsiders at +25000 – and is, moreover, making its first appearance at the Gold Cup.

It has never qualified for the World Cup finals.

Now, these nations meet in Orlando with kick-off at 8:30 pm ET – and with Costa Rica massively favored for a win at -450, also at DraftKings.

The price for Suriname, meanwhile, is at + 1200 with the draw at +575.

Goals May Be On Ration in Orlando

Value is tough to find here.  So it is a good idea to look at the team props. The offer of  +140 for Costa Rica to win both halves certainly looks promising.

However, the Surinamese team delivered a better performance than expected against the Jamaicans and enjoyed 53-percent possession while creating 10 goal-scoring attempts.

So Costa Rica may not have it all its own way.

Despite its respected standing in global football, Costa Rica entered this Gold Cup in dismal form.

The team had failed to win in 13 matches before the competition with a record of six defeats and five draws.

Significantly, its last win had been a 2-1 defeat of Curacao in the CONCACAF Nations League way back in November 2019.

Costa Rica’s win against Guadeloupe was a much-needed confidence booster.

Its warm-up game for the tournament had been a 4-0 hammering in a friendly against the USA.

So the win against the lowly-rated Guadeloupe side was a much-needed confidence booster despite the weakness of the opposition.

It was the first game in charge for the team’s new Colombian coach Luis Fernandez Suarez.

The scoring was opened after only six minutes by veteran striker Joel Campbell of Mexico’s Club Leon who was formerly with Arsenal – and notched up his 20th international goal.

Ariel Lassiter of Houston Dynamo followed up in the 21st minute with his first international strike. He is one of five MLS players in the squad.

Then, subsequently, Raphael Mirval pulled one back for Guadeloupe on the stroke of half-time.

Finally, however, Costa Rica’s two-goal lead was restored by the long-serving Celso Borges of Spain’s Deportivo La Coruna after 70 minutes with his 24th goal for the side.

The three-goal score was Costa Rica’s highest tally in two years. Its performance was cool and seamless with Suarez’s side holding possession for 63-percent of the time.

No Win in Five Meetings for Suriname

Meanwhile, Suriname has not beaten Costa Rica in five previous meetings.

The most recent game produced a 4-1 win for Costa Rica in a World Cup qualifying tie in Suriname way back in 2008. In the same competition, Costa Rica won 7-0 at home.

Furthermore, Suriname had lost 4-0 in a World Cup qualifier in Canada in its final match before the Gold Cup began.

However, it had racked up 6-0 victories against Bermuda and Aruba in the same qualifying tournament.

The Surinamese side was up against it after conceding inside just six minutes against Jamaica in its opening Group C game, with Shamar Nicholson of Belgian club Charleroi on target.

Suriname  forward Gefilo Vlijter was close to an equalizer against Jamaica.

It got tougher when the lead was extended in the 26th minute by Bobby DeCordova-Reid of English Championship outfit Fulham.

But Suriname still gave a good account of itself – with forward Gefilo Vlijter of Beitar Jerusalem close to an equalizer after eight minutes.

The team also includes Inter Miami full-back Kelvin Leerdam.

Furthermore, the winger Sheraldo Becker of Germany’s Union Berlin is a player to watch after scoring twice on his debut for Suriname in the 6-0 defeat of Bermuda.

To sum up this time, however, Surinamese outsiders will not be stubborn enough to pull off a shock victory but could restrict Costa Rica to a low-scoring win.

Pick: Costa Rica: +140 (To win both halves)
