Can Switzerland Ride Momentum of Win Over France?

Monday in Bucharest was truly one of the most magical nights in Swiss football history. No one gave Vladimir Petkovic’s side any hope of beating the high-flying French, who were tipped as the favorite to lift the Euro 2020 trophy.

However, Switzerland came out firing on all cylinders from the get-go. Haris Seferovic headed home a beautiful goal early in the first half to give the visitors a quick lead, but things went astray in the second period when Karim Benzema scored twice in a span of just two minutes. At that point, most people wrote off the Swiss.

After all, France is typically rock-solid at the back. But, the unthinkable happened.

Seferovic netted again in the 81st minute followed by substitute Mario Gavranovic equalizing in the 90th minute to send the match to extra time. The clash was ultimately decided in penalties, with Yann Sommer saving Kylian Mbappe’s final spot-kick to send the Switzerland fans into a frenzy.

Now, Petkovic’s men prepare for another very tough game with a Spanish outfit who they’ve immensely struggled against. However, after knocking out the world champions in the last 16, absolutely anything is possible for this Swiss team right now. Seferovic who already has three goals to his name in the tournament, will be looking to break down a Spain defense who looked shaky in their meeting with the Croatians.

Spain Hitting Their Stride

The main topic of concern for Espana in the first two group stage fixtures was their inability to find the back of the net, scoring just once. Alvaro Morata missed numerous clear-cut chances and as a whole, Luis Enrique’s squad lacked a killer instinct in the final third. However, after annihilating Slovakia 5-0 in their final game before the Round of 16, the Spaniards continued to wreak havoc against Croatia.

Spain ripped through the 2018 World Cup finalists, with Man City winger Ferran Torres leading the line with a goal and an assist. Morata also finally netted after his poor form prior to this encounter. However, despite putting their clinical abilities on full display, La Roja did blow a 3-1 lead which sent the tie to extra time in the first place. Their backline has to sharpen up in order to progress in Euro 2020.

The Swiss showed what they’re capable of against France and there’s no reason that can’t happen again if Spain gets sloppy. Nonetheless, it’s certainly a positive to see Enrique’s side clicking on the attack. They’ve now scored 10 times in the last two games, which is more goals than the Spaniards bagged in the entire 2010 World Cup in South Africa, which saw them capture the ultimate prize.

If Spain can reach the final at Wembley and win it all, they would pass Germany and become the most successful country in the history of this competition with four trophies. With France out, their chances of going all the way have certainly increased.

Switzerland vs Spain Prediction

It cannot be underestimated just how much belief the Swiss will have heading into the quarterfinals in Russia. To defeat a team of France’s caliber is absolutely phenomenal.

I do believe this is going to be a very close match. Both sides have been scoring a lot lately, therefore the over in goals will hold value. In the end, though, Spain will secure a one-goal victory and continue its dominance against Switzerland. Also, I expect Seferovic to take his tally to four goals.

Pick: Spain to Win by 1 (+250), Over 2.5 Goals (-108), Haris Seferovic to Score (+325)
