Bayern Looking for Another Trophy

Bayern Munich is arguably the most electric side in the world right now, after winning the Bundesliga, the German Cup, and Europe’s most prized competition last term. Their dominance in Germany continued in their season opener last weekend, thrashing Schalke 8-0.

Hansi Flick’s squad had a Champions League campaign for the ages, going unbeaten through 11 matches, which ended in a victory over French powerhouse PSG in the final back in August. Despite being well into his 30’s, Robert Lewandowski continues to smash in goals at a high rate, netting over 50 times across all competitions last season, including 15 in just ten appearances in Europe. Serge Gnabry was also a vital part of their success, scoring nine goals in UCL play.

Alphonso Davies burst onto the scene thanks to his outstanding pace at left-back for Bayern, proving to be a difference-maker for the Germans. He made headlines on numerous occasions after picking apart Barcelona and Chelsea in the knockout stages.

When Flick took over in November as the new boss of Bayern, he quickly brought in a much different philosophy than former manager Niko Kovacs. The Croatian was more defensive-minded, but Flick was ready to take his chances and encourage his side to press high up the pitch at all times. These tactics resulted in an astounding 100 goals in just 34 domestic matches, while Bayern also bagged a record-breaking 43 goals in 11 European fixtures. Dominant to say the least.

Can Sevilla Pull Off the Upset?

Sevilla soared through the Europa League last term, beating a quality Inter Milan side in the final. Along the way, they knocked out both Manchester United and Wolves, while also taking care of business against Roma in the Round of 16. The Spaniards play a similar style of football as their UEFA Super Cup counterparts, where they press high in all areas, even their fullbacks. With this in mind, it’s going to be interesting to see how these teams alter their tactics on Thursday in order to find a result.

Julien Lopetegui’s men secured fourth spot in La Liga last season and will head into the Champions League after this clash. Dutch striker Luuk de Jong scored just three goals in Europa, but they were crucial, with a winner coming against Manchester United in the semifinals and a double in the final against Inter.

Sevilla is currently unbeaten in 21 competitive fixtures, with their domestic season getting underway this weekend. They lost Sergio Reguillon to Tottenham, who was a vital part of their backline last term. But, the La Liga side also secured several signings of their own in the summer, bringing in Ivan Rakitic from Barcelona, while also adding Oscar from Real Madrid and Marcos Acuna from Sporting Lisbon.

History, Team News

Bayern and Sevilla have met just once in the 2017/18 UEFA Champions League Quarterfinals. The Bavarians were the first German side to ever beat Sevilla, beating them 2-1 across two legs.

For Bayern, Kingsley Coman looks set to miss this clash due to fitness, while Canadian starlet Alphonso Davies will also be out due to load management. For Lopetegui’s squad, they will have a completely healthy lineup heading into Thursday’s meeting in Budapest.

It’s hard to look past Bayern’s sheer dominance over the last year. Three trophies and 143 goals in just 45 matches across Champions League and domestic play. They back up their electric attack with a wonderful backline who can also contribute in the final third. Given their 8-0 victory over Schalke just a few days ago, it’s pretty clear that Bayern is showing no signs of slowing down.

I believe this will be a convincing win for the Germans as they will go on to beat Sevilla by two goals on Thursday and capture their fourth trophy in this calendar year.

Pick: Bayern Munich (-295)
