Is Mexico Good Value to Win Group A?

Mexico have an enviable collection of talent ahead of the tournament, and it wouldn’t be a stretch to say this is probably the most talented squad they’ve ever assembled.

Mexico has several players featuring regularly in Europe, lots of experienced elements featuring in their local league, which also happens to be the strongest in the CONCACAF region, and elite young talent such as Gilberto Mora, who has been linked with a move to Real Madrid in the past. They also have a sizable advantage of playing at home in every single game in the group stage, an edge that won’t be strictly tied to the support they have in the stands.

Sure, having the support in the stands can be massive in these tournaments, and it has proven to be particularly beneficial for Mexico in the past. They’ve had their two best all-time World Cup results at home, reaching the quarterfinals in both 1970 and 1986. But that’s not the only edge they’ll have.

Altitude can will be a massive factor, as well. Mexico City is located 2,240 meters above sea level, which should be a huge challenge for teams that aren’t used to playing in these conditions. They’ll play two of their games in Estadio Azteca — the opener against South Africa on June 11 and the June 24 matchup against Czechia. Meanwhile, their match against South Korea on June 18 will be played in Guadalajara, a city located at 1,570 meters above sea level.

Biggest Threats to Mexico in Group A

From a talent perspective, Czechia’s physicality and South Korea’s pace and tactical savvy can pose quite a few problems to Mexico. But El Tri have enough difference makers in midfield and attack to overcome those issues as long as they can find the space to create chances. Despite the heavy criticism they might endure, having Santiago Giménez (AC Milan) and Raúl Jiménez (Fulham) is a luxury for any team in this region.

Jiménez is expected to lead the line in the opener, with Giménez and Armando Gonzalez (Guadalajara) being options off the bench. If Jimenez finds the back of the net as regularly as he does for Fulham in the Premier League, don’t be surprised if he finds a way to challenge in the Golden Boot odds.

Analyzing the Underdogs in Group A of the 2026 FIFA World Cup

It wouldn’t be surprising if Mexico dropped points against either South Korea or Czechia, but it would be stunning if they don’t win any games. That makes the tournament opener against South Africa even more important. With the current qualification system in which eight of the 12 third-placed teams will qualify to the Round of 32, winning the matches against lower-ranked rivals becomes even more important. If you analyze the World Cup game odds, you see that Mexico are strong favorites across the board throughout the group stage.

If you’re interested in how to pick World Cup underdogs, keep close tabs on the Czech Republic. They’re not the biggest country in Europe, and they needed a penalty shootout against Denmark to secure their World Cup berth, but they should be able to impose themselves against South Korea and South Africa.

Mexico should find a way to win Group A and make a semi-deep run in the tournament, aided by the geographical and support advantages they’ll have by playing at home. But since they’re also capable of achieving results from a sporting perspective, feel confident enough to back Mexico as the potential winner of Group A in the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
