USA vs Trinidad and Tobago Preview

An underwhelming opener for BJ Callaghan’s men against Jamaica was quickly put to bed in their second game against Saint Kitts and Nevis when they thrashed the minnows 6-0. It put them within a win of going through to the tournament’s knockout phase.

It was a blistering opening against Saint Kitts and Nevis in which they were 3-0 up inside 16 minutes, with those three goals all coming inside the space of four minutes. It was a win that took their impressive records against Caribbean opposition to 19 wins and two defeats, while against T&T they have won two in two in the Gold Cup.

The Stats and Record Books Favor the USA

All the stats favor the USA in this one as, in addition to their fine record against opposition from the West Indies, they have also gone 18 Gold Cup group matches without defeat. They will however have noted the light work that Trinidad and Tobago, and so will not be underestimating their opponents this evening.

Return to Caution for T&T

Despite returning to their conservative ways against Jamaica, Angus Eve’s men dished ended up losing in disappointing fashion and were unable to build on their opening-day win over Saint Kitts and Nevis. A more experienced and more technically-able Jamaica team was able to dominate the first half and, effectively, get the job done before halftime.

Worth noting though is that more than half of T&T’s squad for this competition – 12 of their 23 players – currently play their club football in either USA or Canada, with others playing in the EFL in England, so it won’t be a game in which they are overawed or overwhelmed.

Massive Win Over US in 2017

Trinidad also have experience of playing massive games against the USA and, despite having their route to the 1990 World Cup ended by the US, they gained revenge in 2017 when a famous 2-1 home win ended the Americans’ hopes of making it to Russia 2018.

If they offer a repeat performance this evening, it would take them to their first Gold Cup quarterfinal since 2015.

USA vs Trinidad and Tobago Prediction

The Soca Warriors’ will see this as a massive chance to make history and, let’s not forget this is an inexperienced USA team. The obvious bet here is the US win by X-number of goals, but it’s worth going big.

For me, there is value in betting on the draw, especially if T&T can keep in tight for the opening half hour and frustrate the Americans. With a draw likely to be enough for the US, the draw should definitely be considered.
