Villarreal on a Roll

Villarreal come into this one off the back of three straight wins and have hit the ground running since the restart. Even in an empty Estadio de la Ceramica, Sevilla have a big challenge awaiting them on Monday night, but they too have some good form behind them and are unbeaten in their last seven La Liga games. As things stand, Sevilla are fourth and Villarreal seventh, but a home win would close that gap to just two points.

For the Yellow Submarine, the enforced break came at a good time as they were on an alarming slide down the table, but they clearly used the reset to good effect and are now the league’s in-form team. Three consecutive 1-0 wins since the restart –  over Celta Vigo, Mallorca and Granada – have put them in touching distance of those lucrative Champions League places.

While Villarreal may not start the game in seventh, due to their game being the final one of the weekend, they will still come into this with a huge amount of confidence and belief. They currently have that priceless commodity – momentum.

One Loss in 10 for Sevilla

Sevilla’s form, while not as stunning as Villarreal’s, is also very good. They’ve lost just one game in their last 10, with their most recent outing being a very impressive 0-0 draw with the mighty Barcelona. Since the restart, Julen Lopetegui’s men have picked up five points from their three games, having also beaten Real Betis and drawn with Levante.

Equally encouraging for Sevilla is that they have, what looks on paper at least, a very favorable run-in with a string of games against sides in the bottom half of the table. If Lopetegui’s side can make the most of these opportunities they have a great chance of earning a Champions League campaign next season, especially if they can keep teams like Villarreal at arm’s length. That’s why this one is so crucial.

Head-to-Head Form Favors Villarreal

In order to get something from this game, Sevilla do have to overcome a fairly ordinary record when playing Villarreal, against whom they’ve lost in their last two and who they have only beaten once in their last seven La Liga encounters. Their defense, which the above table shows to be tighter than the home side’s, will have to be as water-tight on Monday as it was against Barca.

In terms of team news, Villarreal will have center-back Pau Torres available again after missing two games due to suspension, but will still be without the injured pairing of Ramiro Funes Mori and Ramiro Guerra.

For the Yellow Submarine, the enforced break came at a good time as they were on an alarming slide down the table

Sevilla’s Lopetegui has no obvious selection issues and looks likely to have a full squad to pick from, but it seems almost certain that most of the starters against Barca will be given the chance to produce more of the same. One potential change is Ever Banega taking the place of Oliver Torres in midfield, but expect to see the trio of Munir El Haddadi, Lucas Ocampos, and Luuk de Jong line up again as an attacking three.

Value With The Draw?

So, while this is a tough one to call, with both teams in a good run of form, it’s worth noting that four of the last seven La Liga meetings between these two have been drawn. Also, worth mentioning is that Sevilla have drawn three of their last four league games. Therefore, no-one would be surprised if this is drawn too, and at -197 that’s where the value is.

Pick: Villarreal and Sevilla to draw (+197)
