The odds suggest that Alexader Zverev will easily dispatch Jeremy Chardy from the OIympic men’s singles tennis quarterfinals. He’s a -900 favorite to do so.

This is the Olympics, though and historically, strange things happen in Olympic tennis. Already, former world #1 Naomi Osaka was eliminated from women’s singles.

France’s Chardy reached the quarterfinals by defeating Great Britain’s Liam Broady in the third round. Broady was a winner over Wimbledon finalist and world #12 Hubert Hurkacz in second-round play.

Zverev Yet to Drop a Set

Through his first two rounds of his first Olympic experience, Germany’s Zverev didn’t drop a set. The #4 seed opened with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Chinese Taipei’s Yen-Hsun Lu. That match lastest 61 minutes.

Zverev followed by stopping Colombia’s Daniel Elahi Galan 6-2 6-2. He fired 17 winners in that match and converted 87% of first-serve points.

Next up was Nikoloz Basilashvili of Georgia. Zverev was required to work a little harder to get the victory in this third-round match. He battled for a 7-5, 5-7, 7-6 victory. Zverev was dominant with his service game. He slammed 15 aces, compared to three by Basilashvili.

It’s been a solid 2021 campaign for Zverev. The 24-year-old has posted wins in Acapulco and Madrid. Zverev has also showed well at all three Grand Slam events. He was a quarterfinalist at the Australian Open and a semifinalist at the French Open. Zverev reached the fourth round at Wimbledon.

Chardy Grinding Through Field

Chardy battled for all he was worth to overcome Britain’s Broady, winning 7-6(7-3), 4-6, 6-1. He also required three sets to get past Russia’s Aslan Karatsev 7-5, 4-6, 6-3.

Though he swept past Chile’s Tomas Marcelo Barrios Vera in the opening-round play, it wasn’t smooth sailing for Chardy. He needed a tiebreaker to take the second set 6-1, 7-6(7-4).

This is the first time he’s reached the quarterfinals of a major tennis event since the 2013 Australian Open.

Zverev Holds Edge Over Chardy

In five career meetings, Zverev has defeated Chardy four times. The Frenchman won their first meeting on the indoor hard courts of Kuala Lampur in 2015. Since then, Zverev has won four in a row. However, the two haven’t faced each other since 2019.

Their matches are frequently hard-fought battles. Chardy’s lone victory was a three-set affair, as was one of Zverev’s wins. There was also a four-set showdown in the round of 64 at the 2019 Australian Open.

They’ve played four tiebreakers in their last six sets against each other, That’s including an epic 13-11 Zverev triumph in the opening set in the round of 32 at the 2019 ATP Masters 1000 Shanghai Open. That was the most recent time they’ve met on court.

The powerful serve of the 6-foot-6 Zverev always makes him a challenging opponent on a hard-court surface. However, much like Forrest Gump’s box of chocolates, you never know what you’re going to get with the mercurial Zverev.

The German player made it through his first two rounds of the Olympic tournament without committing a single double fault. Against Basilashvili, Zverev committed 14 double faults.

That being said, Chardy struggled mightily to get past Broady. He was the fifth British player invited to represent the country at the Olympics after several players dropped out. Broady was also the lowest-ranked player remaining in the Olympic tournament. Yet Chardy still needed to grind out three sets to advance.

Chardy won’t go down easily against Zverev, but he will go down to defeat.

Pick: Alexander Zverev -900; Zverev 2-1 (+300)
