The Australian Open starts on Monday, but tennis fans have been able to watch fantastic tennis over the past week, and the Yarra Valley Classic final match will be no different. Two strong, talented players will take the court later today in hopes to hoist the trophy before the Aussie Open.

Current World No. 1, Ashleigh Barty will take on a former World No. 1, Garbine Muguruza.

Player Spread Moneyline Total
Ashleigh Barty +1.5 (-134) +118 O 19.5 (-125)
Garbine Muguruza -1.5 (+106) -148 U 19.5 (+100)

Odds taken Feb 6th from DraftKings

World No. 1 Barty

The Australian will be coming into this match with an extra days rest after Serena Williams had withdrawn from their semifinal match. Barty will definitely be looking to win this title, but with the Australian Open draw just coming out, and her being awarded the first seed, it’s hard to not believe she’s not already thinking towards next week.

On the other hand, this is Barty’s last go before starting the Grand Slam, and we’ve see the Australian dominate in the past. She hasn’t had the smoothest ride to the finals, dropping a few sets along the way against players where we wouldn’t expect that to happen, but she found her way in the final.

Muguruza The Favorite

Going into this match, it makes sense why Muguruza is the favorite to win with -148 moneyline. She’s been absolutely dominate in her performance at this tournament, having not dropped a single set, and only 10 games.

She put on quite the performance in her semifinal match against Marketa Vondrousova, where she only allowed her opponent to win one game the entire match, and defeated her 6-1, 6-0.

The two-time Grand Slam champion defeated her semifinal opponent in less than an hour, recording just 10 unforced errors.

Muguruza will be looking for her first WTA singles title since winning in Mexico in 2019. She hasn’t won a title at a WTA 500 level or higher since the Western & Southern Open in 2017.

Head-to-Head

This is not the first time these two players will have seen each other. Barty currently holds the head-to-head record edge with 2-1, and the last time they saw each other would’ve been right before everything shutdown due to COVID-19, at the 2020 Qatar Total Open last February. Barty took that match in three sets.

It might be worth noting that all three singles matches that have been played between these two players has gone the distance.

Best Bet

I don’t think this will be a easy match for either player. Both has somewhat different styles of play. Muguruza is much more aggressive than Barty, whereas Barty is a bit more technical, and plays the court.

At 5’5 Barty has always had to find ways to compete against her stronger and bigger opponents. Muguruza is listed a 6’0, and especially from what we’ve seen this tournament, her power can be overwhelming to some opponents.

This will most likely have to go to a deciding set, where I think Barty’s crafty style of play might be the edge to win.

Pick: Barty (+118)
