The final four is set in Tokyo, and Switzerland’s Belinda Bencic will go up against Kazakhstan’s Elena Rybakina in the semifinals of the Olympics.

Both players have had strong showings at the Olympics this year. Bencic fought off Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova in the quarterfinals to earn her spot, and Rybakina upset Garbine Muguruza in straight sets.

Rybakina will be looking to earn Kazakhstan’s final medal in tennis, while Bencic will look to continue the Swiss presence in tennis by capturing their fifth medal in the sport.

Bencic Continues to Dominate

The 24-year old Swiss is having an incredible week in Tokyo as she has found success in both singles and doubles play in Tokyo.

On route to her singles semifinal appearance, she has knocked off the likes of Jessica Pegula, and 2021 French Open champion Barbora Krejcikova. She also managed to defeat French Open finalist Pavlyuchenkova 6-0, 3-6, 6-3, to earn her spot in the final four.

It will be interesting to see how she is able to conserve her energy as she competes between the two events. Rybakina won’t be an easy opponent in the semifinals, meaning there won’t be much room to take her foot of the gas if she wants to make it to the finals.

Rybakina Upsets Muguruza

The 22-year old has really upped her game and presence in the past couple months and into the Olympics. She managed to reach her first Grand Slam quarterfinal in Paris, as well as the semifinals at the Viking International Eastbourne tournament.

In her four matches here in Tokyo, Rybakina has yet to drop a set. Her toughest opponent of the four would’ve been two-time Grand Slam champion Muguruza, but she defeated her 7-5, 6-1, to end her Olympic run.

Head-to-Head

This will be the first career meeting between Bencic and Rybakina, with their current head-to-head record standing at 0-0.

With many top seed exits early on in the Olympics, the women’s singles draw really opened up, making the medal matches that much more interesting.

Best Bet

I would say that both Bencic and Rybakina do enjoy the faster surfaces, which hasn’t been the case in Tokyo due to the extreme weather conditions. But both players have attempted to adjust and adapt as best as they can.

Rybakina’s serve has been on display all week, while Bencic has really struggled at times to find hers. Bencic true grind has what’s allowed her to win all her matches up until this point, but she’s committed a large amount of errors, including 22 last match, including 11 double faults.

Rybakina managed just one double fault, with six aces in her quarterfinal match, and she’ll look to take advantage of Bencic’s unforced errors.

There’s not a huge difference in time spent on the court between the two players, but with the extremely hot conditions in Tokyo, it’s worth noting. As I mentioned, Rybkina has beat all her opponents in straight sets, minimizing her time on the court. Bencic has seen two of her four matches, and her most recent two, go the distance.

I’d say both players are going to go all out, and it’ll be a tough win for either, so expect it to go the distance as they battle for an Olympic medal.
