Bencic Competing for Gold in both Singles and Doubles

Earlier today, the 24-year old held on to beat her semifinal opponent, Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan 7-6(2), 4-6, 6-3, to earn her spot in the finals of women’s singles here in Tokyo. Her and her doubles partner at the Olympics, Viktorija Golubic, managed to defeat their Brazilian semifinal opponents to also earn a spot in the women’s doubles final as well.

The World No. 12 is looking to win Switzerland’s first singles gold medal since Marc Rosset won in 1992. But her semifinal win and a guaranteed medal will now have Switzerland medal in four consecutive Olympics in tennis.

It took almost three hours, and three sets, but Bencic was determined as she rallied back from 2-5 in the first set. Her tough opponent Rybakina had also not dropped a set yet heading into this match. Fast forward to the deciding set, Bencic saw herself down once again at 0-2. She managed to come back and break her opponent at 5-3 to close it out.

She will need to tighten up her errors if she wants to capture the gold. In her semifinal match, she recorded 12 double faults, but is also now 10-4 in three-set matches this year, and has made the final in two of her last four tournament. Vondrousova will be another tough opponent, who has yet to drop a set.

Vondrousova Books Czech Republic’s First Olympic Singles Final

The Czech Republic has won medals in singles tennis at the Olympics in the past, but have only been able to capture bronze. Vondrousova’s final appearance, regardless of the outcome, guarantees the country’s best singles tennis medal.

The 22-year old entered her semifinal match against Elina Svitolina having only won once in their previous four meetings. But she was able to really dominate this match from start to finish, to earn her spot in the finals with a 6-3, 6-1 win. Svitolina was definitely not playing her best tennis, having recorded 29 unforced errors and only 12 winners. But Vondrousova kept her game at a high level, rather than playing down to Svitolina, and she was able to capture the win.

A shot that has become more and more apart of Vondrousova’s game, and has become a shot that she can trust really at any point of a match, is her drop shot. The shot has been on full display the entire Games, and has played a massive part in her wins.

Head-to-Head

These two players have seen each other only once before and Vondrousova captured the win. They played each other earlier this year in the Round of 32 in Miami, where Vondrousova rallied back after dropping the first set to win 4-6, 6-4, 6-4.

Best Bet

This has all the makings to be a really exciting gold medal match here at the Olympics, and that’s exactly what you want. Despite Vondrousova winning their one and only previous meeting, you could argue that Bencic has had a better year overall, putting up a 17-14 record compared to Vondrousova’s 14-12.

Both players have been on a tear in Tokyo in different ways. Bencic has obviously had herself a very impressive week, playing many hours of tennis to earn her spot in the final in both the singles and doubles events. Vondrousova has yet to drop a set all week, and most notably ended Olympic and hometown favorite Naomi Osaka’s run in the third round.

Yes, this is the Olympics, but fatigue may still be a factor. It’s obvious that Bencic has spent more time on the court than Vondrousova has by playing in doubles. But Vondrousova’s matches have also been quicker, securing wins in two sets, as well as her quarterfinal match being cut short, when her opponent had to retire from the match.

I imagine that this match would go the distance, with the level of tennis both players are playing.

Best Bet: Bencic (+110)
