The Canadian downed the Swiss player in the semifinals of the 2019 US Open en route to her only Grand Slam title.

They meet again on the Grand Slam stage on Wednesday, as Bencic and Andreescu clash in second-round women’s singles play at the French Open.

Bencic, the #14 seed, is the -150 favorite to defeat the unseeded Andreescu.

The match is set for a 10:00 am ET start time on the clay courts of Roland Garros on Wednesday, May 25. The Tennis Channel will be carrying all of the action. It will also be carried on TSN in Canada.

Bencic Makes Short Work of Jani

Bencic required exactly one hour to send Réka Luca Jani to the sidelines in opening-round play at Roland Garros. She whipped the Hungarian player in straight sets 6-1, 6-1.

Last summer’s Olympic gold medalist in women’s singles, world #14 Bencic slammed 28 winners, compared to nine for world #145 Jeni. The latter player was making her first appearance in the main draw of a Grand Slam event since the 2011 US Open.

It’s the fifth time that Swiss player Benic is advancing to the second round of the French Open. Bencic won 77% of her first-service points, while Jeni’s first-service success rate was just 39%. She also converted six of seven break points against Jeni.

Andreescu Growing Stronger

Improving to 7-3 since returning to the court following a six-month absence while resting to boost her mental well being, Andreescu started slowly against qualifier Ysaline Bonaventure of Belgium but finished like a woman on a mission. The Canadian won 3-6, 7-5, 6-0.

Down a set and behind 3-1 in the second set, Andreescu opted for an in-match strategy adjustment. She decided to change her game and put more baseline pressure on Bonaventure. She won an immediate service break and the match began to tilt in Andreescu’s favor.

The 2019 US Open champ hasn’t generally enjoyed her Roland Garros experiences. The victory over Bonaventure was just the second earned by Andreescu in four years of French Open women’s singles play. In 2019, Andreescu earned a three-set victory over Marie Bouzkova.

Bencic vs Andreescu Pick

Based on the form charts, you’d have to be leaning toward Bencic in this match. She’s currently 14th in the world. Andreescu resides in 72nd place in the WTA rankings. Bencic is also the #14 seed. Andreescu is unseeded.

However, if it’s past performance that’s used as the decider, then it’s advantage Andreescu. Her aforementioned 7-5, 7-6 win over Bencic in the 2019 US Open semifinals remains the only time the two players have clashed on court.

Since coming back to the court, Andreescu is getting incrementally better. In two WTA 1000 events this year on clay surfaces, she reached the round of 16 at Madrid. That was followed by a quarterfinal appearance in the Italian Open, when she was ousted by world #1 Iga Swiatek.

Bencic was a recent winner of a WTA 500 match at Charleston that was contested on a green clay surface. Historically, though, clay has proven to be the Swiss player’s weakest surface. She has been a consistent presence in tour this season. Bencic has reached the quarterfinals in 11 of her past 12 events.

Still, there’s something intriguing about Andreescu’s increasing success rate, coupled with her ability to adjust her game on the fly to fit into the situation. Take the Canadian and the price and also play this match to go three sets.

Pick: Bianca Andreescu +120; Andreescu 2-1 (+420)
