French Open Odds & Picks Round of 32 – Men’s Singles

• Of the 32 seeds that began the French Open this week, only 15 made it to the round of 32
• Just two of the 16 matchups feature the two expected seeds: Tsitsipas vs Isner and Medvedev vs Opelka
• Of the Big 3, Medvedev has the biggest challenge. We dig in and pick three good value plays

Nothing Rafael Nadal has done through his first two rounds casts any doubt on why he is the favorite to win the French Open for the 14th time as we enter the round of 32.

The top four favorites are still alive; the next two, Dominic Thiem and Andrey Rublev, went out in the first round.

Diego Schwartzman vs Philipp Kohlschreiber Prediction

Much has been made of Roger Federer, who turns 40 in August.

But Philipp Kohlschreiber, who was out from October 2020 to April 2021, is 37 and also has made the round of 32.

The slight-of-stature German (generously listed at 5-foot-10) has a sweet one-handed backhand. He looked in vintage form as he took care of No. 24 seed Aslan Karatsev, in four sets Thursday to advance to a winnable round of 32 matchup against No. 10 seed Diego Schwartzman.

Kohlschreiber is 1-0 against Schwartzman.

Schwartzman didn’t lose a set in his first two matches. But he had a much softer draw and it’s hard to gauge how he’s playing. He’s a long way from top form.

Don’t EVER count him out.

At +420 to win, Kohlschreiber is well worth a shot. He has reached the round of 16 in Paris twice, but not since 2013.

Stefanos Tsitsipas vs John Isner Prediction

At +650, it appears few are expecting big-serving John Isner to upset No. 5 seed Stefanos Tsitsipas.

But the 36-year-old American has beaten Tsitsipas twice in five previous encounters.

Both came on faster surfaces. And Tsitsipas knows better than to take Isner lightly.

Isner fired 22 aces in three sets agains fellow American and good friend Sam Querrey in his first-round win.

Against Serbia’s Filip Krajinovic in the second round, Isner hit 23 aces in three sets (including two tiebreaks).

A 7-6 score in the first set (i.e., a tiebreak) is at +240. Isner taking a set is at +260. And Isner taking it the distance to five sets sits at +575.

All of those are realistic possibilities, as is the +155 for the match having two tiebreaks or more.

Daniil Medvedev vs Reilly Opelka Prediction

The younger version of Isner, 23-year-old Opelka, hasn’t served as many aces (10 in his first round, 18 in a four-set victory in the second round).

But he has defeated two quality clay-courters in Andrej Martin and Jaume Munar.

And he comes into Paris after posting a semifinal effort in Rome that came out of nowhere.

All three of Opelka’s clashes with Medvedev have been on hard courts. Opelka won the most recent last fall in St. Petersburg.

Of the nine sets they’ve played, five have gone to tiebreaks.

So it’s not a stretch to think that trend will continue, even on clay.

For Medvedev, winning two matches is Paris this week is two more than he had won his entire career. Opelka, too, came into Paris this week looking for his first French Open main-draw win. But he’s ranked a lot lower than Medvedev’s No. 2. He should be swinging far more freely.

Medvedev winning in five sets sits at +500, and a four-set win is at +275.

And as with Isner, look out for the tiebreaks. One tiebreak or more sits at -240.

Opelka for the win is +290, and he’s more likely than Isner to pull off an upset.
