A Good Draw for Keys

Keys is one of those confounding players on the WTA Tour who has all the tools needed to be a perennial top-10 player. But too often she lets herself down with purple patches and poor decision-making . At 28, it has basically defined what has been a good career so far.

And then she has weeks where you remember how she got to the 2017 US Open. Will this be one of them?

The Eastbourne International had some notable late defections. And that has meant a welcoming draw for Keys. She beat lucky loser Tereza Martincova, qualifier Wang Xiyu, and then lucky loser Petra Martic on Thursday to get to the final four. All quality players, but not close to the level she’ll face on Friday, in her first semifinal of the 2023 season.

Gauff and the Grass

It seems eons ago – but was actually in 2019 – that Gauff made her Grand Slam main-draw debut and her first big splash at Wimbledon.

Ranked No. 313 at the time and just 15, she won three qualifying matches and beat five-time champion Venus Williams in her opener, on her way to the round of 16. She hasn’t done better there since, though.

This year has been a (relative) struggle, even though she’s 27-10 and won her season-opening tournament in Auckland in January.

In fairness, Gauff has almost always lost to topnotch players. But as a top-10 player, she should beating at least some of them. Opponents are mercilessly targeting her dodgy forehand, an issue that hasn’t been solved or addressed even though it’s been front and centre the last few years.

After losing her second match in Berlin to Ekaterina Alexandrova, Gauff found the winning track at Eastbourne with a friendly draw.

She took care of fellow American Bernarda Pera, a lefty. Then she got British lucky loser Jodie Burrage. But her victory over doubles partner Jessica Pegula was a rare recent victory over a fellow top-10 even if she had to come back from an 0-3 deficit in the second set to win 6-3, 6-3.

Keys vs Gauff Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2023 Dubai (QF) Outdoor Hard 6-2, 7-5 Gauff
2022 US Open (R32) Outdoor Hard 6-2, 6-3 Gauff
2022 Adelaide (SF) Outdoor Hard 3-6, 6-2, 7-5 Keys

Pegula just kicked off her grass season this week. So while it wasn’t an unexpected result it was still a danger match for the 19-year-old. And she got through it.

Keys vs Gauff Prediction

Despite being a decade apart, there’s a certain symmetry to the careers of these day. Great things expected, but nothing has quite gelled yet. Just one major final each. The big difference is that Gauff has that extra decade to keep progressing.

And both have superb won-loss records on grass, with Keys winning 75 percent of her matches on that surface in her career, despite not having made a major breakthrough at Wimbledon.

Gauff has beaten Keys the last two times they’ve played, over the last 10 months. And both times, it was in straight sets. As impressive as Key’s serve is, Gauff’s is even better and the grass only accentuates that. Keys’s relatively easy draw may make her run to the semifinal look better than it actually was, in terms of her form.

You’d expect the teenager to prevail in this one, especially as Keys would need to focus her tactics on the Gauff forehand. And she tends to just … play rather than adjust things to take advantage of her opponent’s weaknesses.
