Djokovic Coming In Hot

After dispatching the talented young Italian Lorenzo Musetti with the loss of just three games, Djokovic said it was definitely his best match of the week.

There was one slightly tricky period at the start of the second set. But the 6-0, 6-3 victory took just an hour and 14 minutes, and Djokovic faced just one break point.

He kept Musetti below 50% success on both his first and second serve. And be broke him five times.

It was comprehensive.

Tsitsipas has quietly made his way through the draw but he, too, hasn’t lost a set. And his win Friday took just two minutes more than that of Djokovic.

He also hasn’t faced a seed as he defeated Dan Evans, French lefty Corentin Moutet (who took out Cameron Norrie) and American Tommy Paul, who took out Rafael Nadal.

Tsitsipas, Heartbroken by Djoko in Paris

The 24-year-old from Greece is almost playing the “throwback” semi against Djokovic, with the younger Félix Auger-Aliassime and Holger Rune squaring off in the other one.

But losing to Djokovic the last seven times they’ve met is just one of the challenges he will face.

However you break down their head-to-head, one theme is the fact that playing Djokovic in Paris has been nothing but heartbreak for Tsitsipas.

Djokovic vs Tsitsipas Match History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2022 Astana (F) Indoor Hard 6-3, 6-4 Djokovic
2022 Rome Masters (F) Outdoor Clay 6-0, 7-6 (5) Djokovic
2021 French Open (F) Outdoor Clay 6-7 (6), 2-6, 6-3, 6-2, 6-4 Djokovic
2021 Rome Masters (QF) Outdoor Clay 4-6, 7-5, 7-5 Djokovic
2020 French Open (SF) Outdoor Clay 6-3, 6-2, 5-7, 4-6, 6-1 Djokovic
2020 Dubai (F) Outdoor Clay 6-3, 6-4 Djokovic
2019 Paris Masters (QF) Outdoor Hard 6-1, 6-2 Djokovic
2019 Shanghai Masters (QF) Outdoor Hard 3-6, 7-5, 6-3 Tsitsipas
2019 Madrid Masters (F) Outdoor Clay 6-3, 6-4 Djokovic
2018 Canada Masters (R16) Outdoor Hard 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3 Tsitsipas

Last year’s French Open final? Tsitsipas was up two sets to none, and lost.

The 2020 semifinal, fall version? Tsitsipas won the third and fourth sets to push it the distance – and lost.

Their meeting on this same (albeit slower) court, in the Paris Masters quarterfinals in 2019?

A beatdown. Djokovic won 6-1, 6-2.

Tsitsipas is not going to bring much positive karma into this one.

Djokovic vs Tsitsipas Prediction

It’s bad enough that Djokovic is basically inside Tsitsipas’s head. The Serb is also playing crisp, efficient tennis that belies his relative lack of match play this season.

The Greek has won 60 matches this season – an impressive number that leads the ATP Tour.

And yet, for whatever reason it feels like he’s in the doldrums, muted, counting time until the season ends even though he will be at the ATP Finals.

He’s made three finals in the last few months. But he lost to Borna Coric in Cincinnati, Djokovic in Astana and Holger Rune two weeks ago in Stockholm.

A match against Djokovic is not going to help his mood much. And even if, as Djokovic noted, the court in Paris is quicker this year, he has adjusted well. And the quicker court actually plays in his favour against Tsitsipas, giving him more time to track down the serve and set up points as he attacks the Greek’s backhand.

Best Bet: Djokovic in Two Sets (-175)
