Tiafoe vs Dimitrov Prediction

These two haven’t played each other in more than 4 1/2 years. And a lot has changed since then.

Dimitrov was the higher-ranked when when they met in Australia, a tight four-setter won by Tiafoe. But he was No. 5 and Tiafoe was a 20-year-old No. 41 when they met in Toronto in 2018. Both were tight.

Tiafoe vs Dimitrov History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2019 Australian Open (R16) Outdoor Hard 7-5, 7-6 (6), 6-7 (1), 7-5 Tiafoe
2018 Laver Cup (RR) Indoor Hard 6-1, 6-4 Dimitrov
2018 Canada Masters (R16) Outdoor Hard 7-6 (1), 3-6, 7-6 (4) Dimitrov

Now, it’s Tiafoe who has just entered the top 10. And the American went through a solid field to win the grass-court tournament in Stuttgart a few weeks ago.

This is Dimitrov’s 13th Wimbledon; he was a semifinalist back in 2014. But he had won just one match since 2017.

Neither has lost a set through their first two rounds. Although both had pretty friendly draws.

It’s somewhat surprising Tiafoe isn’t more of a favorite, but you have to like him to get into a round-of-16 in your Wimbledon picks.

Tiafoe vs Dimitrov Pick: Tiafoe in Four Sets (+370)

Kostyuk vs Keys Prediction

Madison Keys’s grass craft isn’t in question; three of her seven career titles (including last week at Eastbourne) have come on grass. But that has not yet translated into a big Wimbledon run.

The 29-year-old American has faced a British wild card and a qualifier so far, so it’s tough to use that as a gauge.

Meanwhile, Kostyuk has beaten two players who have recently been inside the top three: Maria Sakkari and Paula Badosa. She was the underdog in both, and will be again.

Sakkari won the first set of their first-round match 6-0. And then Kostyuk came back to win. It was the first top-10 win of her career, in her 15th attempt.

Badosa came in still dealing with a stress fracture in her back. She retired early in the second set against Kostyuk Friday.

Regardless how she got there, Kostyuk will be full of confidence.

In Keys’s case, you just never know. She could come out breathing fire just as easily as she could come out and put up a total stinker with a high unforced-error total.

This one feels like it might take awhile, either way. But calling for the Ukrainian’s third straight upset (at +235 in the Wimbledon odds) isn’t a crazy notion.

Kostyuk vs Keys Pick: Over 2.5 Sets (+160)

Zverev vs Berrettini Prediction

Matteo Berrettini is the former Wimbledon finalist. But Zverev is the seeded player, and the favorite in the Wimbledon odds.

Not a huge favorite at -135, considering he’s won four of their five previous encounters. But Zverev is stll coming back from ankle surgery a year ago.

It’s not vintage Berrettini, either. The 27-year-old  has been dealing with an abdominal injury that he was regularly rubbing, even during his first-round win over countryman Lorenzo Sonego.

Zverev vs Berrettini History

Year Tournament Surface Score Winner
2021 ATP Finals (RR) Indoor Hard 7-6 (7), 10 retd Zverev
2021 Madrid (F) Outdoor Clay 6-7 (8), 6-4, 6-3 Zverev
2019 Shanghai Masters (SF) Indoor Hard 6-3, 6-4 Zverev
2019 Rome Masters (R32) Outdoor Clay 7-5, 7-5 Berrettini
2018 Rome Masters (R32) Outdoor Clay 7-5, 6-2 Zverev

So the Italian is a question mark after playing very little the last few months. But after getting through that two-day odyssey against Sonego, he went out and dropped a straight-set win on No. 15 seed Alex de Minaur.

Berrettini was able to break de Minaur three times; that’ll be a tougher ask against Zverev, who has a much bigger first serve. In seven sets through his first two rounds, Zverev’s opponents are 1-for-9 on break points against him.

Ultimately, though, Zverev is in better form.

Zverev vs Berrettini: Zverev in Four Sets (+330)
