The Aces enter the game with an impressive record of 24-2 overall to sit atop the WNBA standings and four games ahead of the rest of the pack in the league. Las Vegas has won in a league-best eight straight games, including in nine of the last 10 contests. The Aces are coming off a 93-72 blowout victory over the Atlanta Dream on Tuesday in Las Vegas.

The Liberty come into Sunday winners of three straight and in eight of their last 10 games to sit in the second spot in the league standings. The Liberty enter Sunday coming off a 76-66 win over the Minnesota Lynx on Friday in Minnesota.

Second Meeting of Season

Sunday’s game is just the second of four matchups between Las Vegas and New York this season, with the first and only meeting of the year taking place June 29 in Las Vegas. Following Sunday, the two teams will play again Aug. 17 in Las Vegas and Aug. 28 in Brooklyn. They will also square off in the Commissioner’s Cup Championship on Aug. 15 in Las Vegas.

In that first matchup, the Aces flexed their muscles and showcased the separation they have over the rest of the WNBA, coming away with a 98-81 victory at home. Las Vegas displayed their balanced attack offensively against New York, with all five starters scoring 14 or more points en route to finishing two points shy of the 100-point mark against a strong Liberty defense.

New York will need its big three of Breanna Stewart, Jonquel Jones and Sabrina Ionescu to perform better than they did in the first game if the Liberty want to go toe-for-toe with Las Vegas to defend home court.

Two Title Favorites

Both New York and Las Vegas remain as favorites in the 2023 WNBA Championship odds, sitting atop the list of odds for who will ultimately win it all at the end of the postseason.

Las Vegas has the top odds at -275 while New York follows in second at +300. Those two are clear favorites at the moment, with the Connecticut Sun next in the odds at +1500 followed by the Dallas Wings at +2000 and the Washington Mystics at +5000.

The Aces have been nearly unstoppable all season long, but the Liberty have the talent and firepower to not only come away with a win on Sunday but potentially pull off somewhat of an upset in the playoffs if these two teams do indeed meet up in the WNBA Finals in October.

Keys to the Game

The biggest key in Sunday’s game between the Aces and Liberty will be which team is ultimately going to be able to take a defensive stand against the other. Las Vegas and New York feature the top two offenses in the league, with the Aces sitting atop the league in that category and the Liberty ranking behind them in second.

On the defensive end, Las Vegas has been the top performing defense in the league this season, which has been a scary pairing for opposing teams with the balance of both potent offense and lock-down defense.

New York, on the other hand, ranks fifth in the WNBA in defense and has shown the tendency to lack in that area resulting in teams taking advantage of that offensively. In the first meeting of the season, the Aces were able to overpower the Liberty offensively while nearly scoring 100 points and shooting almost 60% from the field. Whichever team is able to limit the other offensively will ultimately come out on top Sunday.

Also keep an eye on the play of the guards in Sunday’s game, with Las Vegas’ Chelsea Gray and Jackie Young owning the first meeting against New York’s Courtney Vandersloot and Sabrina Ionescu. The Liberty guards are going to have to step up if New York wants to defend its home court.

Aces vs Liberty Picks

This matchup is one many fans have been looking forward to, only seeing them battle once so far this season. Las Vegas and New York are the favorites to eventually meet up in the WNBA Finals, so this game will be a nice measurement and preview to what we might see in the postseason.

As for who will ultimately come out on top, the Aces are just too deep and are too dominant of a team to defeat, so expect Las Vegas to stretch the season series to 2-0 over New York. This game should be closer than the first one in June, but the Aces will likely still pull out the win.

As for the best bet of the night, go with the Aces covering the spread set of 4.5 points. Although this game should be closer than the first meeting, Las Vegas is just too dominant and should cover that spread.

  • The Pick: Aces -4.5 (-110)
