Sun Strive to Stretch Win Streak

Connecticut comes into the game against New York not only as the best team in the WNBA, but also the hottest team in the league as the regular season schedule rounds out. The Sun hold a league-best record of 24-8 overall, already having secured a top two seed in the postseason to advance them all the way to the semifinal round. They also hold an impressive 12-game winning streak entering Wednesday, which is by far the longest in the WNBA.

As the top team in the league standings, Connecticut sits ahead of the Las Vegas Aces (22-8) in second place, the Minnesota Lynx (20-10) in third place and the Seattle Storm (20-11) in fourth place. The Sun are now just trying to claim the top seed for the postseason to ensure they will have home court advantage throughout the playoffs.

Leading the way for Connecticut this season has been MVP frontrunner Jonquel Jones who has tallied 19.6 points, 11.2 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.4 steals and 1.2 blocks per game. DeWanna Bonner and Brionna Jones have been a nice pairing behind Jonquel Jones, with Bonner averaging 15.5 points, 6.7 rebounds, 3.5 assists and 1.3 steals a game and Brionna Jones adding 14.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.8 assists and 1.3 steals.

The Sun have been awfully impressive for most of the season and especially as of late, and they also might be getting Alyssa Thomas back soon from an Achilles injury that has sidelined her all season.

Liberty Look to End Losing Ways and Reach Playoffs

On the other side of the court on Wednesday, New York comes into the matchup in Connecticut looking to end a losing streak with a lot on the line in the contest. The Liberty enter the showdown with a record of 11-19 overall but losers of seven in a row and nine of their last 10.

Even with that recent losing skid, New York still has a chance to reach the playoffs as the eighth and final seed, although it’s a long shot to indeed happen. The Liberty are currently tied with the Los Angeles Sparks (11-19) for ninth place in the WNBA standings, trailing the Washington Mystics (12-18) by just one game for the final spot in the postseason. With just two games remaining, the Liberty need a lot to go right to reach the playoffs, but it’s not out of the realm of possibility just yet.

For New York, Betnijah Laney has been its leading producer to this point in the year, averaging a team-high 17.3 points, 5.1 assists and 4.2 rebounds. Behind Laney, Natasha Howard has averaged 14.6 points, 6.9 rebounds, 1.7 assists and 1.1 steals, Sami Whitcomb has averaged 11.9 points, 5.1 rebounds and 2.8 assists, and Sabrina Ionescu has tallied 11.4 points, six assists and 5.8 rebounds per game.

The Liberty have a tough task at hand on Wednesday, but they hope to end their rough stretch and get a much-needed win on the road to keep their playoff hopes alive.

Prediction and Best Bet

Although Connecticut has a top two seed wrapped up and New York should come out in this game with a sense of urgency to try and make a late push in the postseason, the Sun are just too talented and are playing too well as of late.

Connecticut, which is a league-best 13-1 at home, should take this game handily and could nearly eliminate New York officially from playoff contention on Wednesday night at Mohegan Sun Arena.

For the best bet in the game, look at the over/under line of 150.5 listed leading into the contest. The Sun are a dominant defensive team which will keep the score low, but the two squads should hit the over on that total.

  • The Pick: Over 150.5 (-115)
