Third Meeting of Season Between New York and Washington

This is the third matchup of the season between the two teams, with the series tied at 1-1 entering Thursday. The final game of the year between the two squads will take place in the regular-season finale on September 10 in Brooklyn.

In the first game of the year, the season opener on May 19, Washington pulled out an 80-64 victory in Washington DC. The Mystics jumped out to an early lead in that contest, going on to hold off New York thanks to a stellar performance defensively by holding a potent Liberty offense to just 34.3% shooting.

In the rematch on June 25 in Brooklyn, New York bounced back to even the season series with an 89-88 overtime victory. The Mystics once again out-shot the Liberty, but New York owned the battle from three and a late Breanna Stewart three-point play pushed the Liberty over the top at home.

Sitting Atop the Standings

Both New York and Washington are teams that many believe could be right there at the end of the postseason while fighting for a WNBA title, setting the stage for another entertaining battle Friday night like we’ve seen over the first two games.

The Liberty and Mystics are both in the top-four in the 2023 WNBA Championship odds, with New York coming in at second with offs of +280 and Washington sitting fourth with odds of +3500. Oddsmakers are buying these two teams as title contenders and this could be a potential playoff preview on Friday night in the nation’s capital.

Keys to the Game

There are few key things to watch for the third game of the year between these two squads, notably injuries, how each team performs defensively and who can hold the edge from three.

When it comes to injuries, Washington will be without key contributors such as Elena Delle Donne (ankle), Shakira Austin (hip) and Ariel Atkins (ankle), whose absences will be felt especially while going up against a New York team that is relatively healthy. On the defensive end, the Mystics have stepped up in that area over the first two games and have shut down the second-ranked Liberty offense, which is something Washington — the third-best defensive team in the WNBA — needs to replicate to come out on top.

Another difference-maker in the first two meetings between the teams has been how each squad performs beyond the arc. In the first game, both teams were even from three and matched each others’ output from deep. In the second game, the three-ball pushed New York over the edge in being able to pull out an overtime victory. Keep an eye on how the teams are doing from three early on in the game and throughout the battle.

Liberty vs Mystics Picks

This game would typically be a highly-anticipated matchup, but the fact that Washington is without three key players due to injury puts a bit of a damper on the game. New York should be able to utilize those absences and test Washington’s depth on Friday, resulting in the Liberty coming away with a road win and handing the Mystics their second straight loss.

As for the best bet of the night, go with the Liberty covering the already-large spread of nine points placed on this game. Given the injuries on the side of Washington, New York should be able to win by double figures Friday.
