Aces Aim to Continue Winning Ways

Las Vegas comes in to Game 5 on Friday having had its back against the wall the last two games. In both victories of the semifinals, which came in Game’s 1 and 4, the Aces looked impressive en route to blowing out the Mercury. In its two losses, however, Las Vegas has struggled mightily.

So far in the postseason, Las Vegas has been led by Kelsey Plum and Riquna Williams, with Plum leading the charge with 19 points, 3.5 assists and 1.8 rebounds and Williams pitching in with 16.8 points and 1.3 steals. Behind them, Chelsea Gray has averaged 13.8 points, 6.5 assists and three rebounds and A’ja Wilson has averaged 12.5 points, nine rebounds, 3.3 assists and 1.3 blocks per game.

Mercury Try to Pull Off Upset Win

Following the Aces taking an early 1-0 lead with a blowout win in Game 1, the Mercury followed that up with a pair of blowout victories of their own to move one game away from advancing. On Friday, they will have another shot at doing that on the road in Las Vegas.

The veteran trio of Brittney Griner, Diana Taurasi and Skylar Diggins-Smith have been keys to Phoenix so far this postseason, with Griner leading by averaging 19.8 points, 9.8 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 2.2 blocks a game. Behind her, Taurasi has averaged 18.8 points, 4.6 rebounds and 4.4 assists and Diggins-Smith has tallied 14.7 points, 5.3 assists and four rebounds a game. One player to keep an eye on in the game when it comes to her status is Kia Nurse, who left in the early minutes of Game 4 with a knee injury. Nurse has averaged 8.3 points, 3.3 rebounds and 1.5 assists so far.

Prediction and Best Bet

So far in this series, it has been a back-and-forth battle with basically each game being decided in blowout fashion. In Game 1 and 4, Las Vegas was the team that won handily while Phoenix returned the favor in games two and three. In Game 5 however, we should see a much closer game between two teams trying to advance and avoid going home.

The difference maker in the contest might be the fact that the Aces are playing in front of their home crowd in Las Vegas, having recorded a13-3 record during the regular season on their home court. But, the Mercury tallied an impressive record of 12-4 on the road during the regular season, so both teams will be comfortable with where the game is being played.

At the end of the night, Las Vegas will be the team that will use momentum gained from its solid Game 4 win and will complete a comeback in the series to advance to face Chicago in the WNBA Finals. For the best bet of the night, go with the Mercury as 5.5-point underdogs, as this game will likely be decided by less than that mark listed.

  • The Pick: Phoenix +5.5 (-108)
