In the first game of the year on June 2 in Washington, DC, the Mystics pulled away late in the fourth quarter to come from behind and edge the Wings 75-74. Washington struggled from the field, shooting just 32.2%, but scored 20 points off 15 Dallas turnovers and did just enough to come out on top while holding the Wings to 34.2% shooting from the field.

In the second matchup of the season on July 2 in Texas, the Wings put on a show offensively to win by a sizable margin of 89-72 to even the series at 1-1. Dallas exploded in the second half and shot 44.6% from the field, also outscoring a Mystics team without Elena Delle Donne 42-26 in points in the paint while holding Washington to 34.3% shooting.

One Team Rising, One Team Falling

The trends of Washington and Dallas as of late have been in two separate directions, with the Mystics starting to slide down the standings and the Wings rising up the WNBA in the second half of the year.

After being in the top 4-5 of the league most of the season, injuries have caught up to Washington lately and that has resulted in the Mystics falling in six of their last 10 games. Being without Delle Donne, Shakira Austin and Ariel Atkins, three of Washington’s biggest contributors, has played a big factor into that recent slide.

Dallas has been a team that continues to rise as the season progresses, having won seven of its last 10 to move into the top five in the league standings. The Wings are now third in the 2023 WNBA Championship odds at +3500, sitting behind New York (+300) and Las Vegas (-300) as title favorites. The Big Three of Arike Ogunbowale, Natasha Howard and Satou Sabally have played big roles in helping lift the Wings this season and especially as of late.

Keys to the Game

There are a few keys to the game on Friday night when considering your Mystics vs Wings predictions, one being which team is able to control the game offensively and the other being health of both squads.

As far as offense, whichever team has been able to find success shooting the ball and also controlling the paint and holding the edge in fast break points has come out on top in the first two games. Neither team lights it up from three, so the battle in the paint and which team can keep the game up-tempo should come out on top.

Injuries will play a huge factor as well, with Dallas at nearly full strength and Washington without three key contributors. The Wings depth and the Mystics’ lack therof will be the ultimate difference maker.

Mystics vs Wings Picks

When it comes to Friday’s game, we’ll likely see an offensive showcase between two teams have been able to put up a decent amount of points as of late while not being able to hold down opponents on the defensive end. In the end, Dallas’ health compared to Washington’s lack of health will be enough to give the Wings the edge at home.

For the Mystics vs Wings best bet of the night, go with the over on the over/under of 164.5 points. As mentioned, both teams have been recording high-scoring games the last few outings, while also allowing opponents to do the same.
