The NFL Comeback Player of the Year award has been handed out consistently since 1998. The AP did hand out an award from 1963-1966, but awarded one to the AFL and one to the NFL. The 2026-27 NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds opened in early April. You can see the latest NFL CPOY odds below as well as how the odds have changed throughout the 2026-27 NFL season.
NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds
Patrick Mahomes is currently listed as the heavy favorite to win the 2026-27 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. The Chiefs’ QB is given consensus odds of +125 to win the award after tearing his ACL and LCL in December of last season. If you bet $20 on Mahomes to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year at those odds, you would stand to win $25 and return $45. This gives Mahomes a 44.4% chance to win the award.
It is rare to see a player with such short odds to win Comeback Player of the Year at this point of the offseason, but it’s not every year that you see a player of Mahomes’ caliber suffering a major injury. While there are a number of big names among the top contenders for the award, everyone else is very distant from Mahomes in the odds.

The top contenders for Comeback Player of the Year are as follows:
- Patrick Mahomes (+125 consensus odds)
- Kyler Murray (+1000)
- Micah Parsons (+1200)
- Daniel Jones (+1450)
- Malik Nabers (+1500)
There are a couple of players who are given odds to win the award that I do not believe would qualify when considering the spirit of the award, which is returning from a major injury. Among those players are: Malik Willis, who is just becoming a franchise’s starting QB for the first time in his career, Tua Tagovailoa, who was just benched last year due to poor performance, and JJ McCarthy, who suffered some minor injuries last year but was mostly just bad. I would not waste money betting any of these players.

Here are some notes on the NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds movement:
- [April 9] Patrick Mahomes opened as the heavy favorite to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year with near-even odds (+125). The next-best odds belong to Kyler Murray, who is given +1000 odds.
NFL Comeback Player of the Year Trends
- A quarterback has won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in seven of the last eight seasons.
- 10 of the last 12 NFL CPOY winners missed at least five games due to injury the prior season—Joe Flacco and Geno Smith are the two exceptions
- No defensive player has won the award since Eric Berry in 2015
- Since the award came back in 1998, we have seen 18 quarterbacks win, 2.5 wide receivers, 4.5 defensive players, two running backs, and one tight end – the halves are there because the award was split between Steve Smith (WR) and Tedy Bruschi (LB) in 2005
Past NFL Comeback Player of the Year Winners
| Year | NFL CPOY Winner |
|---|---|
| 2025 | Christian McCaffrey (49ers) |
| 2024 | Joe Burrow (Bengals) |
| 2023 | Joe Flacco (Browns) |
| 2022 | Geno Smith (Seahawks) |
| 2021 | Joe Burrow (Bengals) |
| 2020 | Alex Smith (Washington) |
| 2019 | Ryan Tannheill (Titans) |
| 2018 | Andrew Luck (Colts) |
| 2017 | Keenan Allen (Chargers) |
| 2016 | Jordy Nelson (Packers) |
Christian McCaffrey won the NFL CPOY last season after seeing his previous campaign cut very short due to Achilles tendinitis. He returned last season and took on a massive workload for the 49ers offense, helping them put together a great season in spite of being without Brock Purdy for parts of the season, and without Brandon Aiyuk (injury / sat out) and Deebo Samuel (left in FA) all season.
The award often goes to a player who has returned from some serious injury and performed well, but we saw a couple seasons where that was not the case – Geno Smith in 2022 and Joe Flacco in 2023. This led to the NFL sending a memo to voters to remind them of the spirit of the award, which is to honor a player who has overcome illness or physical injury, causing them to miss time the previous season. This memo resulted in the award going back to a player who suffered an injury the previous season each of the last two years, and should be kept in mind when betting this year’s CPOY award.
