The NFL Comeback Player of the Year award has been handed out consistently since 1998. The AP did hand out an award from 1963-1966, but awarded one to the AFL and one to the NFL. The award often goes to a player who has returned from some serious injury and performed well, but we saw a couple seasons where that was not the case. This led to the NFL sending a memo to voters to remind them of the spirit of the award, which is to honor a player who has overcome illness or physical injury, causing them to miss time the previous season. This memo resulted in last year’s award going back to a player who suffered an injury the previous season, and should be kept in mind when betting this year’s CPOY award.
The 2025-26 NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds opened in late-February. You can see the latest NFL CPOY odds below as well as how the odds have changed throughout the 2025-26 NFL season.
NFL Comeback Player of the Year Odds
Dak Prescott is currently listed as the favorite to win the 2025-26 NFL Comeback Player of the Year. The Cowboys’ QB is given +100 consensus odds to win the award after missing the majority of last season due to a hamstring injury. If you bet $20 on Prescott to win NFL CPOY, you would stand to win $20 and return $40. This gives Dak a 50% chance to win the award.

Prescott used a Week 6 performance that saw him throw for 261 yards and three touchdowns to take over as the new favorite to win Comeback Player of the Year, and followed it up with 264 yards and three more touchdowns in Week 7 to bring his odds to even-money. His poor Week 8 outing, which saw him throw for just 188 yards with no touchdowns and two interceptions, didn’t really affect his odds because Christian McCaffrey also had a quiet week.
Christian McCaffrey, who had been the favorite prior to Prescott taking over, also struggled to get going in Week 8, totaling just 68 yards from scrimmage and no touchdowns against the Texans.
The top contender for Comeback Player of the Year are as follows:
- Dak Prescott (+100 consensus odds)
- Christian McCaffrey (+175)
- Daniel Jones (+375)
- Aidan Hutchinson (+450)
- Stefon Diggs (+2400)
The players who saw the biggest rise up the board after Week 8 include:
- Daniel Jones: the Colts QB posted a season-best 136.0 passer rating in Indianapolis’ Week 8 blowout of the Titans. Jones threw for 272 yards and three touchdowns, as his odds improved from +463 to +375.
And the players whose odds fell the most notably were:
- Darren Waller: after missing another game due to injury, Waller’s CPOY odds faded from +3000 to +4000.

After a gruesome leg injury, which saw him fracture his tibia and fibula, cut his previous season to just five games, Aidan Hutchinson opened as the favorite to win the 2025-26 NFL Comeback Player of the Year award. The Lions defender had tallied 7.5 sacks in his limited time, which had him on record-breaking pace, and was the NFL DPOY favorite prior to being injured.
While it may not be surprising to some to see Hutchinson open as the favorite, those who have paid attention to the award over the last decade may be shocked to see someone other than a QB favored.
Since the season began, we saw Christian McCaffrey become the new favorite to win the award, but he gave that title away to Dak Prescott after Week 6.

Here are some notes on the NFL Comeback Player of the Year odds movement:
- [October 15] Dak Prescott overtook CMC as the favorite to win Comeback Player of the Year following another strong performance in Week 6.
- [September 9] After touching the ball 31 times and producing 142 yards from scrimmage in helping the 49ers record a Week 1 win, Christian McCaffrey became the new favorite to win NFL CPOY.
- [August 27] Rashee Rice accepted the NFL’s six-game suspension, which saw his CPOY odds worsen from +1950 in July to +7500.
- [August 20] After losing the QB battle in Indianapolis, Anthony Richardson’s CPOY odds fell from +3000 to +5500.
- [August 15] As it became more clear Brandon Aiyuk would not be ready for Week 1, and maybe not within the first couple of weeks, his CPOY odds fell from an average of +2550 in May to +5250 at this point.
- [July 22] Aidan Hutchinson took back over as the favorite to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year. He and Prescott had very similar odds, but Hutchinson took the lead.
- [June 10] Nick Chubb’s odds improved from +7000 to +4750 after signing with the Texans.
- [March 12] Early money flowed in on Dak Prescott to win CPOY, resulting in him becoming the favorite during free agency.
- [February 24] Aidan Hutchinson has opened as the favorite to win NFL Comeback Player of the Year for the 2025-26 season. Hutchinson was the NFL DPOY favorite prior to a gruesome leg injury he suffered in Week 6 last year. While this award has been dominated by quarterbacks lately, Hutchinson would be a top contender if he returns close to last year’s form. Other top contenders at opening included Christian McCaffrey, who missed almost the entire last season, Dak Prescott, Trevor Lawrence, and JJ McCarthy.
NFL Comeback Player of the Year Trends
- A quarterback has won the NFL Comeback Player of the Year award in each of the last seven seasons
- Nine of the last 11 NFL CPOY winners missed at least five games due to injury the prior season—Joe Flacco and Geno Smith joined Philip Rivers as the only players since 2013 to win it without getting hurt the year prior
- No defensive player has won the award since Eric Berry in 2015
- Since the award came back in 1998, we have seen 18 quarterbacks win, 2.5 wide receivers, 4.5 defensive players, one running back, and one tight end – the halves are there because the award was split between Steve Smith (WR) and Tedy Bruschi (LB) in 2005
