- The Sentry Tournament of Champions tees off Thursday, January 2nd
- Elite winners-only tournament missing some of its big name star power
- See the golfers with the best value to emerge victorious
For many people the Sentry Tournament of Champions from host Kapalua Resort Plantation Course in Kapalua, Hawaii marks the start of the PGA Tour season – even though it technically began way back in September. This is a condensed field comprised of only the winners of PGA Tour events last season with just 34 golfers teeing it up.
While there are several studs competing like Jon Rahm, Justin Thomas and Dustin Johnson, there are also major notables who decided to keep the clubs in the garage instead of making the trip like Tiger Woods, Brooks Koepka, Rory McIlroy, Phil Mickelson, Justin Rose, Francesco Molinari and Open Champion Shane Lowry.

Two-Time Champ Dustin Johnson Sporting Great Value
It’s not often that Dustin Johnson enters a tournament as the fourth favorite to win, especially at a track that he’s tasted victory at twice – but that’s where he finds himself after a dreadful (by his lofty standards) last half of 2019 due to a knee injury which resulted in very un-DJ like results after the PGA Championship in May.
There are horses for courses, however, and that rings true for Johnson at Kapalua.

Two years ago that near ace on the 433 yard par 4, 12th hole propelled him to a whopping eight-stroke victory to go along with his four-shot triumph in 2013. Just because he wasn’t at his best the last half of 2019 doesn’t mean he’s to be discounted this week at at +1000 odds, you’re getting really strong value.

2020 Sentry Tournament of Champions Best Value Picks
- Matthew Wolff (+6000): 20-year-old whiz kid has already learned how to win on the PGA Tour and that could lead to a bunch of other victories sooner rather than later. Pair of top-18 finishes in his last three starts, Wolff has all the tools to compete at Kapalua especially with his ability to hit it deep (fourth longest driver this season).
- Kevin Na (+7000): Finally able to convert victories consistently on tour, Na has no respect despite converting three W’s in his last 30 starts on the PGA Tour. At these odds, you’d be crazy not to consider the pure ball striker.
- Martin Trainer (+75000): A Professional golfer only has to beat 33 other players and his odds are this ludicrously high? What’s the catch? Well, since capturing the Puerto Rico Open he’s been bad…very very bad. His best finish was 41st at the Players Championship in 21 subsequent events. Not likely to win, but in a condensed field, too good to pass up.
