  • A solid field heads to Jackson, Mississippi to play the Sanderson Farms Championship from October 1st-4th
  • Sam Burns, Doc Redman, and Stewart Cink are our favorite matchup plays this week
  • Read below to find analysis and our favorite matchup plays for this week’s 2020 Sanderson Farms Championship

After Hudson Swafford captured the 2020 Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship last week, the PGA Tour tracks back to the United States to play the Sanderson Farms Championship in Mississippi.

The Par 72, 7,461 yard Country Club of Jackson is the setting for this event. A fairly easy course with wide fairways sets up perfectly for low scores.

In the opening odds, the young Scottie Scheffler is the favorite for this week’s tournament at +1000. Not far behind him is South African Louis Oosthuizen at +1400, who had a solid outing at Winged Foot a couple of weeks ago.

I went 2-for-3 in my matchup plays at the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship last week. The 54-hole leader Adam Long was one of my picks last week, however, he faltered in his final round and lost his matchup to Mackenzie Hughes. Let’s take a look at which three players I have my eye on this week.

Burns Lives for Bermuda Greens

Sam Burns has proven to be a worthy competitor on the PGA Tour. Burns tied-13th at the 2020 Wyndham Championship firing four rounds in the sixties. Burns hasn’t looked back since the 2020-21 season has started.

The 24-year-old finished tied-seventh at the Safeway Open after holding the 36-hole lead. Last week, Burns finished tied-28th in Punta Cana, however, a third-round 78 derailed his tournament.

Sam Burns has done very well on Bermuda grass in the past. His 13th placed finish at the Wyndham Championship, sixth at the 2020 American Express, ninth at the 2019 RBC Heritage, and third at the Sanderson Farms Championship back in 2018 were all on Bermuda terrain.

Burns lives just two hours from the Country Club of Jackson in Mississippi, so he is definitely familiar with the track. The LSU product’s matchup this week is against Corey Conners. The Canadian isn’t playing his best golf recently, missing the cut at the U.S. Open and last week’s tournament at Corales Golf Club.

Burns has the edge at this golf course with his track record on Bermuda grass. Burns is a much better putter than Conners and will be in a battle for his first PGA Tour victory come Sunday.

Pick: Sam Burns (-112)

Emiliano Grillo vs Cameron Davis Matchup Odds

Golfer Odds
Emiliano Grillo -112
Cameron Davis -118

All President’s Cup Matchup

I picked Cameron Davis at the Safeway Open where he finished 12-under par and finished tied-36th. Davis won his matchup over Talor Gooch that week and he showed flashes of some really good golf.

Davis is up against Emiliano Grillo this week, who has been playing some solid golf as well. The Argentinian finished tied-21st last week in the Dominican Republic, but if it wasn’t for a final round of 73 he could have had a much stronger finish.

In the latter part of the 2019-20 season, Davis had some solid finishes. The Australian finished tied-12th at the 3M Open, tied-15th at the Wyndham Championship, and tied-29th at the Northern Trust.

Davis was on fire prior to the COVID-19 outbreak. The 25-year-old finished tied-ninth at the Sony Open, tied-eighth at the Honda Classic, and made six consecutive cuts.

Davis has the advantage over Grillo this week due to his ability to pound the golf ball. Last season, Davis finished 20th in Driving Distance averaging 308 yards per drive. This course sets up much better for Davis with the wide fairways and big greens. If Davis’ putter is working fine this week, he could be in for a sneaky good week.

Pick: Cameron Davis (-118)

Lucas Glover vs Stewart Cink Matchup Odds

Golfer Odds
Lucas Glover -138
Stewart Cink +110

Cink’s Fountain of Youth

The over 40 matchup this week is Stewart Cink against Lucas Glover. A combined 10 PGA Tour victories between the two veteran golfers should make for a very interesting matchup.

Cink is coming off a huge win at the 2020 Safeway Open. The 47-year-old fired off rounds of 65 on both Saturday and Sunday to finish 21-under par for the week and capture his first PGA Tour title since his 2009 Open Championship.

Glover, on the other hand, finished tied-65th at the Safeway Open but had a solid outing at Winged Foot finishing tied-17th at the 2020 U.S. Open.

Cink still crunches the ball as he averaged 315 yards per drive at the Safeway Open. Cink his fourth in Strokes Gained: Total and 10th in Strokes Gained: Tee-to-Green for the 2020-21 season. Although he has played in just one of the three events in the new season, those statistics still matter.

Country Club of Jackson is very similar to the set up at Silverado. A long and wide golf course that allows for many birdies. Cink has played generally well at these courses and will look to build on his fresh victory this week in Mississippi.

Pick: Stewart Cink (+110)
