Odds on Aaron Rodgers Being a Packer for 2021 NFL Season

Aaron Rodgers’ season came to a disappointing conclusion Sunday, and the Green Bay Packers quarterback sounded like a man who might be either going into retirement or headed to another team.

“There’s a lot of guys’ futures that are uncertain, myself included,” Rodgers told the media in his postgame teleconference following the Packers’ 31-26 loss to the visiting Tampa Bay Buccaneers in the NFC Championship Game.

Odds have been set on whether he will be with Green Bay come Week 1 of the 2021 season.

Summer Foreshadowing?

It is unfathomable to envision the 37-year-old Rodgers playing for another team after spending his 16-year career with the Packers,

While It almost gets lost after Rodgers emerged as the favorite for 2020 NFL MVP, he talked in the summer about how he felt his time with the Packers might be winding down.

Green Bay traded up to select Utah State quarterback Jordan Love in the first round of the NFL Draft in April. The move left Rodgers feeling like the Packers were in the beginning stages of phasing him out.

However, a lot of those thoughts subsided during the season. The Packers had the best record in the NFC at 13-3, and beat the Los Angeles Rams in the divisional round of the playoffs before getting knocked off by the Buccaneers, who were three-point underdogs.

Rodgers also had an outstanding season. He completed 70.7% of his passes for 4,299 yards and a league-high 48 touchdowns with just five interceptions. His 121.5 passer rating also topped the NFL.

Disappointing Ending

Despite all that success, the subject of Rodgers’ tenure with Packers ending returned Sunday.

Part of that certainly stemmed from the disappointment of the loss. It marked Rodgers’ fourth straight defeat in an NFC Championship Game since leading the Packers to a Super Bowl title following the 2010 season.

The Packers also lost in last year’s NFC title game after a 13-3 regular season.

Rodgers often said the 2020 team was his favorite and he had enjoyed the season more than any other. Rodgers was also certain this was the season he would get his second Super Bowl ring.

Instead, he heads off into the offseason with uncertainly about his future, at least in his mind.

Time for New Love?

If the Packers do move on from Rodgers, it will not be because of his performance.

Rodgers was not at his sharpest Sunday and was hurt by an interception late in the first half that helped the Buccaneers build a 21-10 lead. However, he did throw for 346 yards and three touchdowns.

The only reason the Packers might turn to Love next season is if they believe it is time to retool the offense, especially with running backs Aaron Jones and Jamaal Williams and Pro Bowl center Corey Linsley set to become unrestricted free agents.

The 22-year-old Love has yet to take a snap in the NFL and the Packers would be putting him in a tough spot if they expect him to lead them back to the playoffs next season.

Love has talent, though.

Love had a fine career at Utah State, throwing for 8,600 yards and 60 touchdowns in three seasons. Yet he also did not play against the strongest of competition in the Mountain West Conference.

What Would Rodgers Fetch?

It would be interesting to see what kind of trade packages would be offered if the Packers decide to shop Rodgers. It seems certain they would want a first-round draft pick as part of any deal.

Despite his advancing age, Rodgers is clearly one of the best quarterbacks in the league. Plenty of teams could use him, including the Denver Broncos, Indianapolis Colts, San Francisco 49ers and Washington Football Team.

One drawback for the Packers might be a crowded trade market. The Detroit Lions have agreed to deal Matthew Stafford and Deshaun Watson reportedly wants the Houston Texans to trade him.

Also making Rodgers attractive to other teams is he has three years remaining on six-year, $134-million contract. The cap hits are $37 million in 2021, $39 million in 2022 and $28 million in 2023.

Perhaps once the emotion of a difficult loss subsides, so will speculation about Rodgers leaving the Packers.

However, there is just enough smoke here to believe there might be fire. Thus, some value can be found in betting on Rodgers having played his last game with the Packers.
