In what could very well be a first round playoff matchup in the West playoffs, the Utah Jazz will be in San Francisco to battle the Warriors Monday night.

Utah is fending off Phoenix in trying to claim their first conference top seed since the 1998 season. The Warriors, meanwhile, sit eighth, but would prefer to keep themselves above the 9-10 places, where it’s a one-game, win-or-go-home scenario.

As is with almost every game in the NBA in this truncated and congested stretch run of the regular season, both teams will be playing short-handed.

Jazz Hitting Key Notes

It was a rough go for Utah when Donovan Mitchell first went down with an ankle injury, as the team scuffled, losing three of five. Since then, however, Quin Snyder’s club has found its footing, reeling off wins in six of their last seven, including five straight heading into Monday.

The player picking up the pace has been Bojan Bogdanovic, who has led the team in scoring in five of the last seven games, including a 48-point 8-rebound masterpiece, which included drilling eight three-pointers in a showdown win two games ago over the Denver Nuggets.

Over this 7-game stretch, he’s averaging 28.1 points on 57.6% shooting from the field and a crisp 47.9% from three. In fact, Bogdanovic has hit at least 10 field goals in four of his last five starts, showing off both volume and precision.

They’ll need his scoring again Monday, as Mitchell has been ruled out again, as has his starting backcourt mate Mike Conley, who has a hamstring injury.

Steph is The Story

Steph Curry’s season may not be MVP-worthy — no player has ever taken home the award with his team lower than a sixth seed (that was Russ Westbrook’s first triple-double season in OKC). But there’s no other way to describe how Curry has carried the Dubs to where they currently reside.

His performance in a 136-97 obliteration of the Thunder was just the latest in what’s become one of the greatest scoring stretches in NBA history. Curry finished the game with 49 points in a tidy 29 minutes of work, leading GState to their fourth win in five games.

He went 11-for-21 from three-point range, the seventh time he’s drilled 10+ from downtown in a season, breaking his own NBA record. This was Curry’s 10th 40-bomb of the campaign. Here’s the crazy part: he’s went for five of those 10-or-more three point games and six of those 40+ outings in his last 15 games.

This is not for show, either. Golden State needs those points. They’ll enter Monday down Kelly Oubre Jr (wrist) and Damion Lee (health and safety protocol). They join Klay Thompson, James Wiseman and Eric Paschall, who are already out.

What’s the Best Bet?

Even missing their starting backcourt, this Jazz team is tough to contend with. They rank top-five in the NBA in both offensive and defensive rating. And they’re built for the modern NBA: ranking first in both 3-point takes and makes, while hitting at nearly a 40% clip. It’s no wonder they’re 26-12 in the conference, and the only team currently at 50 wins on the year.

This is the third and final meeting between these two teams this year, with Golden State taking the previous contest 131-119. Curry combined with Andrew Wiggins for 60 points, while Draymond Green had an 11-point, 12-rebound, 12-assist triple double.

Golden State is a solid 21-11 at Chase Center, including 19-13 ATS as the home side. Utah is a formidable 19-14 on the road, but just 16-17 ATS away from home. Minus Mitchell and Conley, I don’t know if team defense can smother Curry right now, but if Utah does withstand Steph, it won’t be by a lot.
