Nets Still Fighting for Playoff Position

With a few games left in the regular-season schedule, Brooklyn has a spot in the playoffs wrapped up although it is still fighting for positioning before the play-in tournament tips off on April 12.

Following Tuesday’s win over Houston, the Nets made a nice step towards jumping in the standings with both the Atlanta Hawks and the Charlotte Hornets losing on Tuesday. Brooklyn is tied with Atlanta for the eighth seed with three games left, leading the 10th seed Hornets by a half-game.

The task of improving their playoff seeding won’t be easy for the Nets on Wednesday, especially while taking part in the second night of a back-to-back. Brooklyn has struggled on the back end of back-to-back’s, holding a record of 2-11 in 13 games in such games. The Nets do have an impressive road record this year at  23-17, while New York holds a below-average mark of 16-23 at home this season.

Against the Knicks, Brooklyn will need the duo of Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving to continue to thrive as they have as of late. Durant, coming off of a 55-point performance last Saturday, added 18 points and nine rebounds in Tuesday’s win. Irving, who went off for 31 points on Saturday, tallied a team-best 42 points in the win Tuesday.

Barrett, Knicks Try to Play Spoilers

The Knicks will not only try to top a cross-town rival, but they will also attempt to spoil the Nets’ attempt at improving their seeding for the play-in tournament. A big part to that will be the play of Barrett, who has been red-hot for New York as of late.

Barrett, who is enjoying a career year with 20.1 points, 5.9 rebounds and 2.9 assists per game, displayed his latest example of solid play of late in Sunday’s win over Orlando, scoring a team-high 27 points to go along with six assists and five rebounds. If Barrett can continue to play to the level he has over the last handful of games, averaging 22.6 points and 5.6 rebounds over that span, the wing will make like difficult the Brooklyn.

Another aspect to the Knicks that has been key this season is their ability to take advantage of the three-ball. In Sunday’s blowout victory, New York made more than 15 threes for the 25th time this year, holding a record of 16-9 when doing so.

Nets vs Knicks Prediction

At first glance, some might think that Brooklyn should be able to take the game with ease despite it being a “road” game in New York. But look for this rivalry to be a closely contested matchup due to the deeper factors on both sides.

The Nets will be playing on the road on the second night of a back-to-back, although Brooklyn will have the urgency to get hot and improve its playoff seeding. The Knicks will be well-rested and taking on the Nets on their home court, also playing with a chip on their shoulder of trying to play spoilers.

Although it will be a closer game than some initially think it should, Brooklyn should still be able to come out on top in the contest. For the best bet of the night, go with the Knicks being 7.5-point underdogs since this game will likely be decided within that spread.

  • The Pick: Knicks +7.5 (+110)
