  • The Toronto Maple Leafs are -120 home favorites over the Boston Bruins in an NHL game slated for Friday, April 29
  • Toronto has won both meetings this season
  • This could potentially be a first-round Stanley Cup playoff matchup

Potentially, the Toronto Maple Leaf could get to decide if they play the Boston Bruins or Tampa Bay Lightning in the opening round of the Stanley Cup playoffs. It’s certainly not an easy call.

The Lightning are the two-time defending Cup champions. Meanwhile, the Leafs have lost three series to the Bruins since 2013 and haven’t beaten Boston in a playoff series since 1959.

Entering play Thursday, Toronto sits second in the Atlantic Division with 113 points. Tampa Bay (108) and Boston (105) are next in order. Each had two games left to play.

The Leafs and Bruins will close out the regular season against each other on Friday. Oddsmakers are setting the Maple Leafs as -120 home favorites. Four of Boston’s last five games have gone under the total.

Boston vs Toronto Betting Trends

Puck drop for Friday’s game at Scotiabank Center is set for 7pm ET. The public is split on this game. There are 57% of spread bets placed on the Maple Leafs at -1.5. However, the moneyline splits show 86% of the bets are on the Bruins at +100 odds. As well, 86% of the public bets are on the Under of 6.5.

Both the Leafs (+900) and Bruins (+1600) are sitting as top-10 contenders in the Stanley Cup odds. Thinking ahead to the potential of a long playoff run, Toronto coach Sheldon Keefe is sitting out 60-goal scorer Auston Matthews, first-line winger Mitch Marner and #1 goalie Jack Campbell for this game.

Keefe also announced that he planned to reunite William Nylander and John Tavares on his second line heading into the playoffs.

The Bruins were playing the Buffalo Sabres on Thursday. They’d won three in a row heading into that game. Boston was 4-1 in the previous five games but just 5-5 over that past 10 contests.

Forward Brad Marchand (1-4-5) was leading the team in scoring over the past five games. Eric Haula’s three goals were best on the club in that span.

Boston vs Toronto Injury Report

The Leafs won’t have defenseman Rasmus Sandin (knee) back from this game, leaving his playoff status uncertain. Goaltender Per Mrazek (groin) and forwards Ondrej Kase (concussion) and Michael Bunting (lower body), a top contender in the Calder Trophy odds, are all out.

Boston is missing defenseman Jacob Zboril (knee) and forward Jesper Froden (lower body).

Leafs Resting Campbell

With Campbell resting and Mrazek injured, the Leafs will be handing the goal crease to rookie Erik Kallgren. He beat the Bruins 6-4 on March 29 at TD Garden.

Bruins vs Leafs Projected Starting Goalies

Team Goalie Record SV% GAA
Bruins Jeremy Swayman 31-12-4 .911 2.78
Maple Leafs Erik Kallgren 7-4-1 .886 3.42

Bruins coach Bruce Cassidy is suggesting that he’s still undecided regarding his playoff starter in goal. Veteran Linus Ullmark got the starting nod Thursday against Buffalo. Rookie Jeremy Swayman will get his final regular-season audition against the Maple Leafs.

Ullmark (24) and Swayman (23) are the only 20-win tandem in the league this season.

Bruins vs Leafs Prediction

On paper, perhaps it makes sense to go with the Bruins in this game. The Leafs are resting several key players and have nothing to play for in terms of their own finishing position.

Meanwhile, though, the Bruins could be deciding whether they face the Leafs or the Carolina Hurricanes in the opening round. Historically, both matchups have proven favorable for Boston.

However, too often in these games, it’s the team with no pressure or expectations weighing on their shoulders that come up big.

Pick: Toronto Maple Leafs ML  (-120)
