Wimbledon Day 3 Second Round Odds, Picks, Upsets, and Parlays

Only three seeded players fell in the first round, from the top half of the Wimbledon men’s singles draw.

No. 7 Hubert Hurkacz lost a crazy five-setter he well should have won, while No. 16 Pablo Carreño Busta and No. 18 Grigor Dimitrov both retired with injury in their opening matches.

So the half has gone according to form, so far.

Wimbledon Day 3 Men’s Second-Round Odds

It’s the other half of the draw that’s in disarray with title contenders Marin Cilic and Matteo Berrettini both out because of COVID, and No. 6 seed Félix Auger-Aliassime out in the first round Tuesday to serve-volleyer Maxime Cressy of the US.

It’s making a hash of the pre-tournament favorites list.

Wimbledon Day 3 Parlay

Even though a lot of the matches are fairly close, odds-wise, most of them look to be won by the favorites.

But there are three upsets we’re looking at that have at least a decent shot at happening: Steve Johnson over British wild card Ryan Peniston, John Isner over Andy Murray, and Ugo Humbert over No. 3 seed Casper Ruud – a grass neophyte.

Put together, that tennis parlay works out to odds of … +1367. Definitely a long shot, but also not unrealistic.

And if that’s too risky, any of the above are good bets to pull off the upset outright.

Wimbledon Day 3 Matches to Watch

Novak Djokovic vs Thanasi Kokkinakis Pick

Djokovic is the prohibitive favorite in this one.

But Kokkinakis, a player with big weapons who has been beset by injuries the last few years and only now is beginning to fulfill his promise, is no pushover.

His career high of No. 69 came over seven years ago, when he was still a teenager. This week, he’s got that back up to No. 79 (from nowhere), and is up six more spots already with his first-round win.

He has some pretty big scalps on his resumé. Those include a win over Roger Federer in Miami. He also beat top-30 players Cilic and  Isner on the way to his first career title in January.

On the other side, Djokovic did … not look great in his first-round win over Soonwoo Kwon of Korea.

He got it done in four sets. But it was looking a lot more complicated than that for awhile. He’s likely to get better from there, though.

He is likely to have a hiccup in this one, at some point, although the six-time champion should take it.

Prediction: Over 3.5 Sets (+190)

Jiri Vesely vs Alejandro Davidovich Fokina pick

At -177, Davidovich Fokina is the favorite in this match, even though he’s a Wimbledon neophyte who had just one main-draw match on his resumé before this year.

The win over the in-form-on-grass Hurkacz in the first round – a wild ride he probably should have won in straight sets but ended up pulling out in the fifth set match tiebreak – took 3h28 and took a whole lot out of him both physically and emotionally.

2017 junior champion Alejandro Davidovich Fokina comes back from a break down in the fifth set & 4-7 down in the tie-break to beat 2021 semifinalist and seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz.

7-6(4), 6-4, 5-7, 2-6, 7-6(10-8).

Vesely has played Wimbledon eight times before. And he’s had some great results, making the second week twice.

He’s a huge-serving lefty, 6-foot-6 and (charitably) listed at 207 pounds. We’d guess 20 more than that.

And Vesely is just the kind of guy you wouldn’t want to play, to try to follow up a big victory when you’re really not very at home on a grass court.
