Millions of Kansas Sports Bets Placed Since September 1

Kansas sports betting is only four weeks old and Kansans have been flocking by the droves to get their bets in.
According to the Kansas Lottery, from Sept. 1 through Sept. 11, more than 2.4 million sports bets were placed in the Sunflower State. The breakdown of retail compared with online sports bets was not available.
Kansas Sports Betting Proving Popular
Kansas is reaping the rewards of the quickest state turnaround from a bill being signed into law to its launch. Kansas only needed about 74 days compared with Iowa’s previous record-setting 95 day turnaround. Arizona needed 148 days to launch its sports betting program after its bill became law, now the third-quickest turnaround in the country.
The gamble paid off, as the state launched sports betting before the start of the NFL season. The Kansas Lottery noted that bettors have so far chased in over $47 million in winnings from Sept. 1 through Sept. 11.
The Kansas City Chiefs were the most popular bet on sports team during the time frame, followed by the Kansas City Royals, the Kansas State Wildcats, and the Kansas Jayhawks.
Per the sports betting bill signed into law by Gov. Laura Kelly (D) just three months ago, each casino is able to offer both in-person and online sports betting with up to three sports betting operators.
Kansas Casinos Have Operator Partnerships
The four casinos contracted with the state to offer sports wagering through independent platforms are Boot Hill Casino & Resort; Ford County near Dodge City; Kansas Star Casino in Mulvane; Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway, Kansas City, KS; and Kansas Crossing Casino & Hotel in Pittsburg.
The casinos already have several sports betting partnerships in place:
- Boot Hill Casino and Resort: DraftKings and Bally BetÂ
- Kansas Star Casino: BetMGM and FanDuel
- Hollywood Casino at Kansas Speedway: Barstool Sportsbook and FOX Bet
- Kansas Crossing Casino and Hotel: Caesars Sportsbook and PointsBet
Casinos will also be able to partner with up to 50 additional locations, including professional sports franchises, to install sports betting kiosks. Currently, the only professional franchise in the state is MLS Sporting Kansas City.
The sports betting bill levies a 10% tax on retail and online sports betting. The law is expected to bring in nearly $10 million annually in taxes, of which 80% will be earmarked to lure professional sports franchises to relocate to the state. This means upwards of $8 million a year could be invested into the specialized “Attracting Professional Sports in Kansas” fund.
