Buffaloes Pull Off Shocking Week 1 Upset

Deion Sanders, the Pro Football Hall of Famer, has been busy reinvigorating Colorado’s football program, and boy, did it pay off. Colorado stunned the college football world in Week 1, upsetting No. 17 TCU as 20.5-point underdogs.

This college football Week 1 upset was historic for Colorado, as it not only shattered a 24-game losing streak as underdogs for the Buffaloes, but marked the team’s first road win since 2021.

While all eyes were on Sanders, the real stars were the new recruits and his son, Shedeur Sanders. The young quarterback threw for a record-breaking 510 yards, completing 38 of 47 passes with four touchdowns. He wasn’t alone; four other Buffaloes racked up over 100 receiving yards each.

The game was a rollercoaster, with Colorado leading for most of the first three quarters. They clinched the win on a fourth-and-2 play, where Sanders connected with Dylan Edwards for a 46-yard touchdown.

Travis Hunter, ESPN’s No. 2 recruit for 2022, dazzled in his debut. He not only intercepted a crucial pass but also had 11 receptions for 119 yards. He became the first FBS player in two decades to log over 100 receiving yards and an interception in the same game.

Colorado Key Stats vs TCU

Highlights Stats
Shedeur Sanders’ Record 510 passing yards
Travis Hunter’s Debut 119 receiving yards, 1 interception
Dylan Edwards’ Performance 135 receiving yards, 4 touchdowns
Team’s Overall Yardage Broke 26-game < 400 yards streak
Final Score Colorado 45 – 42 TCU

TCU, who had to overcome the offseason loss of several star players to the NFL, including QB Max Duggan, had no answer to Colorado’s newfound offensive might. Their quarterback, Chandler Morris, struggled to keep up, sealing their fate.

Colorado now heads home to face Nebraska in Week 2. The opening Colorado vs Nebraska odds have the Cornhuskers favored by 9.5 points at  Folsom Field in Coach Prime’s home debut. Kickoff is 12:00 pm ET on FOX.

Colorado’s National Title Odds Improve

Sportsbooks adjusted Colorado’s price in the college football National Championship odds following their Week 1 upset win, but they certainly aren’t ready to consider the Buffaloes serious national title contenders yet.

Colorado’s national title odds moved from +20000 to +10000 at DraftKings after Saturday’s game, meaning their implied win probability of winning the championship shifted from 0.5% to 0.99%. The updated Pac-12 Title odds have yet to be posted, but you can expect them to have a much better chance to win the conference.

The latest college football national championship odds show Georgia as the favorite to win their third consecutive title, with odds of +225, while Alabama (+600), Ohio State (+700), and Michigan (+800) are the other top contenders.

While winning the national championship remains a longshot for Colorado, their odds and performance so far indicate that they could be a team to watch throughout the season.
