This time around, Toronto enters as the top seed in the division with home-ice advantage at Scotiabank Arena, while Florida brings that championship swagger as the defending Cup winners with one of the league’s most complete lineups.

Leafs vs Panthers Recent History

These teams have recent playoff history, with Florida eliminating Toronto in five games in the 2023 Eastern Conference Second Round.

The Panthers also took the regular-season series this year, winning three of four meetings and outscoring the Leafs 13-7. Sam Bennett and Sam Reinhart were especially effective, combining for nine points in those contests.

Maple Leafs Survive First Round Test

Toronto advanced to Round Two after a hard-fought six-game series vs Ottawa, powered by a balanced attack and strong special teams. Mitch Marner led the way with seven points, while William Nylander and Auston Matthews each chipped in six.

John Tavares and Matthew Knies chipped in with some clutch goals, and the blueline got in on the action with key markers from Morgan Rielly and Oliver Ekman-Larsson.

Anthony Stolarz started all five games between the pipes, putting up a 2.25 GAA and .899 save percentage, while Jake McCabe was a workhorse on defense, logging over 22 minutes a night.

The Leafs’ power play was cooking at 31.3%, with Tavares and Knies each lighting the lamp twice on the man advantage. Their penalty kill wasn’t too shabby either at 76.9%.

Toronto averaged three goals per game, gave up 2.8, and fired 25.6 shots per game while absolutely dominating in the dot with a 56.1% faceoff win rate.

Panthers Eye Repeat

Florida rolls into this series as the reigning champs, fresh off putting Tampa Bay to bed in five games. The Panthers have shown off their ridiculous depth, with six guys posting at least five points in the opening round.

Sam Reinhart led the charge with six points, while Matthew Tkachuk and Sam Bennett each buried three goals. Anton Lundell and Alex Barkov both tallied five points, and Eutu Luostarinen was a beast with a team-best +6 rating.

On the back end, Nate Schmidt scored three goals, including two game-winners, and Seth Jones logged a team-high 25:41 per game.

Sergei Bobrovsky was sharp in net, going 4-1 with a 2.21 goals against average, a .901 save percentage, and one shutout.

Florida’s special teams were solid, converting at 25% on the power play and killing penalties at an 88.9% clip. The Panthers averaged 3.8 goals per game, allowed just 2.4, and owned a 49.3% faceoff rate.

Florida will be without Aaron Ekblad for Game One due to suspension, but the team is accustomed to adjusting on the blue line, having played stretches without him this season.

Leafs vs Panthers Prediction

With both squads coming in hot, this matchup is shaping up as a showdown between Toronto’s high-octane offense and faceoff dominance against Florida’s depth, defensive structure, and championship DNA.

The Leafs’ special teams have been money, but Florida’s balanced attack and ability to roll four lines could really test Toronto’s defensive depth.

The goalie battle will be front and center, with Stolarz facing a Panthers team that’s lighting the lamp nearly four times a game, while Bob looks to build on his Cup-winning form from last season.

My gut tells me this series is going the distance, but Florida’s playoff experience and special teams edge should be the difference. Look for the Panthers to narrowly take it in six or seven, unless Toronto’s big guns can finally break through and flip the script from their last playoff meeting.
