  • Scottie Scheffler is a -450 favorite to win the PGA Championship entering Sunday’s final round
  • Scheffler will begin Sunday with a 3-stroke lead, but no other player is shorter than +1600 to win

If you like swinging for the fences in your outright golf betting, well than Sunday at the PGA Championship is for you. Scottie Scheffler is your 54-hole leader by 3 strokes at -11, but according to online sportsbooks, they might as well not even play the final round.

Scottie Scheffler-450-11
Alex Noren+1600-8
Jon Rahm+2200-6
J.T. Poston+3000-7
Bryson DeChambeau+3000-5
Davis Riley+4000-7
Jhonattan Vegas+5000-7
Si Woo Kim+5500-7
Tony Finau+11000-6
Keegan Bradley+12000-5

That’s because Scheffler is a -450 favorite to win his first Wannamaker Trophy, and third career Major. Alex Noren, the only player at -8, is the next choice on the odds board at +1600. That’s an insane gap between first and second place given it’s only a 3 shot difference. Jon Ram, who posted the low round of the day before Scheffler got things rolling rounds out the top-3 at +2200.

Scheffler Makes a Saturday Statement

The World Number 1 started Saturday 3 strokes behind Jhonattan Vegas, but it didn’t take long for him to pull head. After a bogey on 1, Scheffler birdied 4, 5 and 7 to go out in 33. Another early bogey on the back 9 didn’t phase him, as he then pulled off the shot of the tournament on 14.

Scheffler drove the Par-4 leaving himself a tap-in for eagle. He proceeded to birdie three of the final four holes afterwards, carding a 6-under round of 65. Scheffler leads the field this week in strokes gained tee-to-green and ball striking, ranking top-seven in strokes gained off-the-tee and around the green as well.

The two-time Masters champ is coming off a tournament where he lapped the field and shot -31 to win by a touchdown. Now he’s making a very difficult golf course look like a walk in the park, splitting fairways and peppering greens. Scheffler’s made 15 birdies and 2 eagles through 54 holes, while averaging only 26 putts per round.

There’s nothing stats wise to suggest he won’t raise the Wannamaker Trophy on Sunday, but stranger things have happened. Golf is the most volatile game there is, and things can change in an instant. His -450 odds give him an implied win probability of 82%, which is absurd given he’s only up by three. You can’t possibly bet Scheffler at this number, so either pass on the outright market all together, or target one of the longshots within striking distance.

PGA Championship Picks for Sunday’s Final Round

  • Jon Rahm to Win (+2200): My favorite chaser is Rahm. He’s been one of the most consistent players all week, and has the best pedigree of anyone within five shots to run down Scheffler. Rahm leads the field in strokes gained off-the-tee this week, which is significant at a course playing over 7,600 yards. He’s third in ball striking and 15th in strokes gained tee-to-green, but has struggled with the putter. Despite the struggles with the flat stick, the two-time Major champ is fourth in birdies this week. If he gets it going on the greens early on Sunday don’t be surprised if he’s quickly breathing down Scheffler’s neck.
  • Ryan Fox Top-10 (+340): My next favorite pick isn’t sexy, but it’s a great bet to cash. Ryan Fox has been hitting the ball as well as anyone all week, he’s just battled demons with the putter. Fox ranks fifth off-the-tee and sixth in ball striking, but 67th on the greens. He won last week in Myrtle Beach and has the length and touch to go low, as long as the putter co-operates. Fox enters play two shots out of a top-10 position, and I’m betting on some positive regression with the putter to vault him into a big pay day.
