Both the Arizona Wildcats (44-20) and Louisville Cardinals (40-23) suffered crushing late-inning defeats to open the College World Series. Now, they play each other for the right to survive on Sunday at Charles Schwab Field in Omaha, Nebraska.

Action gets underway at 1:00 pm CT/2:00 pm ET, with ESPN+ carrying the broadcast. Let’s break down Arizona vs Louisville.

Arizona vs Louisville Odds

The Wildcats are slight -130 favorite on the moneyline against the Cardinals, who have +100 underdog odds and 1.5-run ‘dogs against the spread. The total is set at 10 runs.

The winner of this game will face the loser of Coastal Carolina-Oregon State. As it’s a double-elimination format, the winner of from the elimination bracket would need to win both from the team in the Winner’s Bracket.

Because both schools are perilously close to having their seasons end on Sunday, the College World Series odds have Arizona (+1400) and Louisville (+1700) with the second and third longest odds in the field.

With the stakes this high, I expect this one to be close.

The Cardinals suffered just their second loss in NCAA Tournament play, and it was about as devastating as you can describe it.

Trailing 3-1 in the ninth, Louisville plated two runs to tie the game, only to be get walked off by the 8th-ranked Oregon State Beavers.

It was a classic, low-scoring Cardinals’ type of game, as they’ve allowed three or fewer runs in five of seven postseason games. Both times their opponents topped that number, they’ve lost.

They will start either junior righty Tucker Biven (3-0, 4.19 ERA) or freshman lefty Ethan Eberle (6-2, 4.34 ERA) in the win-or-go-home scenario. Neither of them pitched in the previous meeting between the two teams on Feb 16, when Louisville bashed its way to a 13-1 win.

Arizona’s starter Sunday is freshman righty Bailey Smith (3-3, 4.01 ERA), and he started that February game, pitching four innings of 3-hit ball with five strikeouts before the wheels fell off.

Smith will try to get the Wildcats to shake off their opening loss to Coastal Carolina, where a 4-4 tie in the bottom of the eighth before surrendering three runs to lose 7-4.

It’s only the Wildcats’ second loss in postseason play as well, as they swept the regionals before going the distance with 5th-ranked North Carolina in the Super Regionals — winning two straight after getting bombed 18-2 in the opener.

Louisville was just outside the Top 50 in scoring at 7.8 runs per game, but it’s been a different story in the postseason, where the Cardinals are plating 5.3 runs per game.

Arizona has punched up in the playoffs, averaging 7.3 runs across its seven games, a jump from the 6.6 runs per game they put up in the regular season.

Louisville does have an upset win over top-seeded Vanderbilt, but Arizona took down a heavily favored Tar Heels team in the Super Regionals. The Wildcats lost back-to-back games after win just three times in the regular season, while it happened to Louisville five times.

In the slightest of margins, Arizona should have just enough offense to push the Cardinals out of the College World Series, though likely not enough to cover the spread.
