Week 5 of the college football season gives us a Thursday night American Conference extravaganza as Army (1-2 SU, 1-2 ATS) meets East Carolina (2-2, 3-1 ATS).
The Black Knights are eager to return to the gridiron after a comeback bid against North Texas fell short in overtime last week, while East Carolina enters off a three-touchdown loss to BYU. Get in on the Army vs East Carolina action before this one kicks off from Dowdly-Ficklen Stadium at 7:30pm ET.
Look for my Army vs East Carolina prediction, along with odds and my betting picks, below.
Army vs East Carolina Prediction
This game script screams grind-it-out field position battle. Army lives in the bottom-10 nationally in pace, loves to bleed the clock, and is happy to punt from midfield.
ECU is more of a middle-of-the-pack passing offense, but they’re unlikely to get many offensive opportunities in this one, as the Black Knights throttle the play volume. Fewer plays equals fewer points, which makes the under 52.5 the play.
Moreover, the total has gone under in nine of East Carolina’s last 13 home games. I like that to continue on Thursday night, as Army’s ball control style should cap the number of possessions in this one.
- Pick: Under 52.5 (-106)

Army Betting Trends
Army’s ground and pound ethos holds true once again in 2025. While Army’s shotgun-option offense has modernized, the Black Knights still rush the football at a sky-high rate. The Black Knights rank fourth in the nation in rushing yards per game, and chew up the clock with an average time of possession of over 36 minutes.
When Jeff Monken’s team stays on schedule, they string together long drives, and turn four quarters into 9-10 total possessions. Quarterback Dewayne Coleman leads the way with 230 passing yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, as well as 217 rushing yards and two scores on the year.
Defensively, Army gives up more than 150 yards per game on the ground and 32 points per game, but should be able to stop an East Carolina rushing attack that hasn’t gotten off the ground this season.
Crucially, ECU loves to throw the football down the field and generate explosive plays, and the Black Knights will take those chances away. Army are surrendering just 5.53 yards per play on the year.
Be aware, the Black Knights are 5-0 ATS in their last five road games. Army are also on a 10-2 SU run against fellow American Conference opponents.
East Carolina Betting Trends
ECU offense loves the RPO and throwing it deep. The issues arise across the Pirates from down to down efficiency. Despite facing the likes of FCS school Campbell, John David Baker’s offense ranks 113th in the country in EPA per rush.
However, they boast an explosive passing offense led by quarterback Katin Houser. Houser has thrown for 1258 yards and five touchdowns, to go along with three interceptions this season.
The Pirates will need to get their passing attack rolling to have success in this one, as running back London Montgomery is averaging only 4.2 yards per carry.
East Carolina’s defense is no slouch. The Pirates surrender just 19.3 points per game, 3.6 yards per carry, and 5.4 total yards per play. Having said that, ECU’s front seven will be put to the test against an Army squad that continually tests your limit up front.
The Pirates are 4-1 ATS in their last five games, with the under hitting in six of their last seven.
Army vs East Carolina Odds
East Carolina are 1.5-point favorites for Thursday night’s clash with Army in the college football odds. The Army vs East Carolina total is sitting at 52.5, with the over favored at -114 and the under coming back at -106.
Bettors are all over the Pirates in this one as 87% of bets and 95% of the money is on the East Carolina moneyline in the college football public betting splits.
