West Virginia vs BYU Prediction
This one’s as lopsided as they come. BYU has looked like one of the most complete teams in the country through four games, posting top marks in offensive EPA and net EPA. On the flip side, the Mountaineers have one of the worst defenses in the Power Four and will be entering this game without their starting quarterback.
The Mountaineers blew out the Cougars 37-7 just two seasons ago. But, in 2025, the hunters have become the hunted. Don’t overthink this one: back the Cougars to continue their journey to a College Football Playoff berth with a blowout victory over the visiting Mountaineers.
- Pick: BYU -18.5 (-118)
West Virginia Betting Trends
The Mountaineers enter this one after being thoroughly dominated by Utah in a 48-14 loss last week. West Virginia turned the ball over twice, converted only 23% of third downs, and last starting quarterback Nicco Marchiol to injury in the loss.
Rich Rodriguez may be the coach in Morgantown again, but this is far from the Mountaineers’ offense of old. In fact, they’re scoring just 16 points per game, good for 114th in the country, and their 4.7 yards per play ranks 116th. Additionally, WVU ranks 132nd in EPA per pass this season.
Sorry, Mountaineers fans, Pat White and Tavon Austin aren’t walking through that door. Instead, backup quarterback Khalil Wilkins will step in under center after throwing for 63 yards in relief last week. The freshman is in for a rough night in Provo.
Defensively, the Mountaineers have held their own, allowing 3.9 yards per rush and 166 passing yards per game. They’re 38th in EPA per rush, and 62nd against the pass. But those numbers won’t mean much if the offense can’t keep pace.
Four of West Virginia’s last six road games have gone under the total, and the Mountaineers are only 1-4 ATS in their last five Big 12 games.
BYU Betting Trends
BYU’s defensive dominance has the Cougars in the conversation for the College Football Playoff. The Cougars rank 13th in the country in EPA per pass and 24th in EPA per rush. Additionally, BYU sits fifth in the nation in net EPA per play. Led by true freshman quarterback Bear Bachmeier, this BYU team is the real deal.
Through four career games, the California native has thrown for 697 yards, with 10 total touchdowns and no turnovers. Bachmeier leads the Big 12 in touchdown-to-turnover ratio, has completed 68% of passes and taken only four sacks. He’s the engine behind a methodical Cougars offensive attack, scoring 28 points per game against Power 4 opponents.
On top of that, BYU’s rushing attack bleeds the clock and takes the pressure off their young gunslinger. The Cougars sit 18th in EPA per rush, while putting up 4.8 yards per carry.
On the defensive side, BYU surrenders only 12 points per game, which ranks seventh in the country.
