Wednesday night college football returns for Week 7 with a Conference USA Liberty vs UTEP showdown. Each of these teams sits at 1-4 both SU and ATS through five games, with Liberty dropping four straight since a win over FCS Maine, and UTEP defeating only UT Martin.

Neither team is reliable offensively, but Liberty boasts a top-60 offensive unit in PFF Grade. Their ground attack churns out over 160 rushing yards per game, and the Flames can use that to control the pace of this game. UTEP allows over 150 rushing yards per game, and has been awful against the run all year.

On the defensive end, the Flames are also top-20 in passing yards allowed, while the Miners have relied on their passing attack. Don’t expect to see offensive fireworks as neither of these teams has moved the ball efficiently this season, with Liberty ranking 119th in offensive EPA and UTEP at 129th.

I expect this to be a wildly sloppy contest, with plenty of turnovers. As such, we’re making the safe play on the under.

Quarterback Ethan Vasko leads the way for the Flames with 763 yards and six touchdowns while completing 57% of passes. Liberty has been far from an efficient offense, scoring just 18 points per game. Evan Dickens is the lead back with 340 rushing yards and three touchdowns on the year.

Liberty’s defense could be the difference in this one. The Flames are 20th against the pass, allowing just 162 yards per game. With UTEP’s reliance on the pass, and their awful rushing attack, the Flames can focus on limiting Malachi Nelson. That said, Liberty as just 1-6 SU and ATS in their last seven games.

UTEP Betting Trends

UTEP has been a one-dimensional offense this season, relying almost completely on its anemic passing game. Quarterback Malachi Nelson has thrown for eight touchdowns and nine interceptions. Keep in mind, Nelson threw for just 73 yards with four interceptions last time out against Louisiana Tech, and has looked lost on the football field this season.

The Miners rank 121st in rushing yards at 101 per game, with Hausaun Wilson leading the backfield with 205 yards and a touchdown so far. If UTEP can’t get its rushing attack rolling, it could be a long night as the Liberty defense can hone in on its one-dimensional attack.

Defensively, UTEP allows 340 total yards per game, which is good for 56th in the country. The Miners go as far as the front seven of this football team takes them. UTEP ranks top-25 in the nation in sacks, QB hits and tackles for loss.

Keep in mind, home hasn’t been a safe haven for the Miners of late. UTEP is just 3-10 SU in their last 13 home games.
