I am predicting Bowling Green to win by three scores and cover the sizable spread, even on the road. Bowling Green has not won since Oct. 11, but there is a reason UMass is winless in its first season back in the MAC.

The Bowling Green Side

Bowling Green has had four passers throw at least 22 attempts this season. Last week, Hunter Najm got the start, but he did not fare well against Akron, completing 9-of-26 passes for 138 yards, a touchdown, and two interceptions.

Austin Dendy has been a breakout in the last two games, posting back-to-back games with at least 110 rushing yards. For the season, Dendy has 378 yards and three rushing touchdowns. He has also caught three passes for 53 yards.

Once again, Bowling Green’s top receiver is a tight end. Following Harold Fannin’s footsteps, Jyrin Johnson leads the team with 35 catches and 446 yards. He is second on the team in receiving touchdowns to another tight end, Jacob Harris.

Gideon Lampron has been a defensive stud for the Falcons. He has a whopping 15.5 tackles for loss from his linebacker position. He has over 100 total tackles on the season with 2.5 sacks, a pass deflection, and a forced fumble.

The UMass Side

The Minutemen have not beaten an FBS team since they knocked off Army on Oct. 28, 2023. They have beaten three FCS schools since, but they have a resounding 0-22 against FBS records in their last 22 games. Many of their losses have not been particularly close. UMass has the worst scoring offense in FBS this season and the third-worst scoring defense.

Last week, quarterback AJ Hairston left with an injury after one pass attempt, but he is slated to return this week. The second-year quarterback has completed just shy of 50% of his passes this season, and he has a 1-to-1 touchdown-to-interception ratio.

Colorado transfer Brandon Hood has been the top rusher for UMass. He has 93 carries for 359 yards, and two touchdowns – all marks that lead the team. Hood has also pitched in with 11 catches for 88 yards through the air.

In the passing attack, watch for Jacquon Gibson. Gibson has five or more catches in four of UMass’ last five seasons. He leads UMass with 53 catches and 478, but he has curiously yet to score a touchdown. Only Arkansas State’s Chauncy Cobb has caught more passes (64) without scoring this season.

The lone beacon of light in the UMass defense is Marques White. White leads the Minutemen with 11.0 tackles for a loss and 5.0 sacks. He has a pair of pass deflections and two forced fumbles on the season.

Bowling Green vs UMass Pick

  • Bowling Green -14.5

Here is why I am taking Bowling Green -14.5 in this regular-season finale:

  • UMass is winless, but a whopping nine of their losses have come by at least 15 points. The Minutemen are 3-8 ATS, only covering +44.5 and +33.5 in slightly smaller blowouts versus Missouri and Ohio, as well as +16.5 versus Buffalo in a seven-point loss.
  • Admittedly, Bowling Green has lost its last five games, including four games as a favorite, but they are at least competitive against other MAC schools. In that span, they lost to Kent State, Eastern Michigan, and Akron by one score. Kent State and Akron beat UMass a combined 86-16.
  • UMass has allowed at least 38 points in four straight games, while they have been unable to top even 14 points since mid-October. Even with Bowling Green’s less-than-stellar offense, they should be able to score 30 points.

Bowling Green has a perfect 4-0 record lifetime versus UMass. The schools squared off in all four seasons UMass spent in the MAC in its first stint as East Division opponents.

Back in 2015, Bowling Green won a barnburner 62-38. In a game that featured over 1,000 passing yards and 1,250 total yards, Bowling Green scored at least 10 points in all four quarters, while UMass scored at least a touchdown in all four quarters.

Bowling Green’s Matt Johnson went 33-for-39 for 450 yards, five touchdowns, and a pick. On the UMass side, Blake Frohnapfel threw for 409 yards, three touchdowns, and an interception. Future five-year NFL vet Tajae Sharpe caught 13 passes for 156 yards and a touchdown for the Minutemen.
