  • The Hawaii Rainbow Warriors are 7.5-point favorites vs the Wyoming Cowboys on Saturday night
  • The Cowboys have won three of the last four meetings

With their quest for a Mountain West title left in the Las Vegas dust, the Hawaii Rainbow Warriors (7-4, 4-3 Mountain West) look to close out their regular season with a win when they host the Wyoming Cowboys (4-7, 2-5 Mountain West).

While Hawaii still has a bowl game to look forward to, Wyoming will try to end a rough season by avoiding a fourth straight loss.

The books don’t exactly like their chances, setting them as big road underdogs in the college football odds.

However, the Cowboys bring a respectable defense to the table, so I’m going to targeting the total in my Wyoming vs Hawaii prediction.

This one kicks off Saturday night at 11pm ET from Clarence T.C. Ching Athletics Complex in Honolulu, HI, with both Scripps Sports and Spectrum Sports Network carrying the broadcast.

Wyoming vs Hawaii Prediction

Wyoming’s offense is the worst in Mountain West, averaging a conference-low 16.8 points per game, and it’s hit the skids super hard during this current 3-game losing slide.

Losses to San Diego State, Fresno State and Nevada, the Cowboys have scored a total of 17 points, and not more than seven in any of the three contests.

The offense has done next to nothing to help a defense that has done Yeoman’s work just to keep things from crashing out badly.

Wyoming is allowing just 19.9 points per game, including a passing defense that ranks inside the Top 15 in the nation, allowing just 165.2 yards through the air. Overall, they rank 45th allowing 337.6 yards per contest.

Hawaii stayed in the mix for the Mountain West crown for a long time, but their defense got crushed in two of the last three games, the latest a 38-10 drubbing at the hands of the UNLV Runnin’ Rebels, ending their hope for a conference title.

It’s been a wildly inconsistent run for the Rainbow Warriors since ripping off three straight conference wins to move to 6-2 on the season, seemingly controlling their own destiny.

Hawaii was steamrolled by the San Jose St Spartans, who piled up 630 yards of offense en route to a closer-than-it-seemed 45-38 win.

The Rainbow Warriors bounced back with a huge win over San Diego State, only for the air to let out of their sails with a blowout loss this week, where UNLV built a 24-7 lead and never looked back, part of 470 yards of offense allowed in the loss.

Hawaii is still a Top-5 scoring team in the conference, and boast one of the premier passing attacks in college football, which has helped them average nearly 29 points per game.

Based on my Wyoming vs Hawaii prediction, my pick and best bet is to take the Under.

The Cowboys are coming off a 13-7 loss to Nevada, where they managed just 220 yards of total offense — which, remarkably, is their highest yardage output during their losing streak.

Wyoming’s supposed strength is running the ball (their 138.4 yards per game is Top 10 in the conference), but they are averaging just 88 yards per game on the ground in the last three.

Perhaps it’s no surprise that the Cowboys have gone Under the total in five straight games, including going below Saturday’s 44.5 scoring line each of the last four games.

The books have set some far bigger lines for Hawaii, but the Rainbow Warriors have gone Under the total in three of their last four games.

The passing attack with Micah Alejado is among the best in the country, but if Wyoming’s pass defense is able to hold up in that key category, Hawaii isn’t built to manufacture offense on the ground, ranking 125th in the nation at 101.8 rush yards per game.

The Rainbow Warriors haven’t had to go up against plenty of top defenses in their conference slate, but besides their blowout win over San Diego State (the top scoring defense in Mountain West), it’s hasn’t been great, held to 21 points against Fresno St, the second-ranked scoring defense and to 10 points against UNLV, who rank eighth.

They are also coming off one of their worst outings of the season, which cost them a regular-season title. The letdown factor is real, and might show itself in a slow start for Hawaii.

The Rainbow Warriors might get close to the number themselves, but I don’t see the Cowboys contributing much to the total themselves.

This line was as high as double-digits, but has moved down to a touchdown as we’ve moved closer to kickoff, with most books settling at 7.5 points.

The Cowboys are hefty +245 underdogs on the moneyline with the Rainbow Warriors on the short end as -300 favorites.

The total started has lived in virtual stone at 44.5 points, with slight half-point variations both ways, if you find the right book.
