The New York Islanders and Pittsburgh Penguins had opportunities to win Monday night and ensure they’d enter the Olympic break in a playoff spot. Instead, both squandered leads and now meet Tuesday in a four-point Metro Division clash at UBS Arena.

Pittsburgh (28-14-11) sits second in the Metro with 67 points, just two ahead of New York (30-20-5) in third. Puck drop is 7:30 pm ET on TNT.

Both teams are dragging after tough losses Monday. The Isles blew an early lead in a 4-1 loss to Washington, while Pittsburgh’s six-game winning streak ended with a 3-2 defeat in Ottawa where they managed just 16 shots.

The Penguins have been streaky for two months now. They won six straight from Dec. 28 through Jan. 8, sandwiched between a 1-5-4 stretch and a 1-2-2 skid. But when they’re on, they’re dangerous. Pittsburgh outscored opponents 31-15 during that recent six-game heater.

The Islanders’ loss to the Caps snapped a three-game winning streak, their longest since early December. That’s the issue with this New York team. They rank 25th in goals per game (2.80) and struggle to generate offense consistently.

Penguins vs Islanders Key Stats

Special teams could decide this one. Pittsburgh’s power play ranks fourth in the league at 26.8%, while the Isles are 26th at 16.0%. The Penguins are also fourth on the penalty kill. That’s a massive edge if this game gets chippy.

I think the Pens edge this one in a tight, low-scoring affair. They’ve been the better team analytically and have more offensive firepower with Sidney Crosby (58 points) leading the charge.

• Penguins ML (-110 at bet365)

The public is backing the Islanders at home with 66% of bets, but the sharper money is on Pittsburgh. The Penguins are 7-1 in their last eight road games and 6-1 overall in their last seven. They’ve also thrived as road favorites this season, going 4-1 in that spot.

The juice is heavy, but the hit rate justifies it. Karlsson has cleared 1.5 shots in six straight games against the Islanders and 10 of his last 11 against top-10 scoring defenses.
