Inter Milan will be hoping to replicate last year’s memorable run to the final, and the business end of the competition begins now as they take on plucky underdogs Bodo/Glimt in the playoffs. 

The Norwegian outfit shocked Champions League contenders Manchester City in their final group game in one of the most memorable upsets in recent times. But one-off results are easier to achieve than a two-legged victory.

Can Bodo/Glimt Keep Up With Inter Milan?

There is no shortage of competitiveness for Inter Milan in Serie A, with AC Milan, Napoli, Juventus, and Roma all trying their best to keep up. But in a crowded top five, Inter Milan boasts a healthy eight-point lead over their fiercest rivals, AC Milan.

Saturday’s 3-2 win against Juventus proved just again that Inter can do it any which way, and they have really begun to find their scoring boots. They put five past Cremonese earlier this month and thumped Pisa 6-2 at the end of January. 

Inter’s European Pedigree

Aside from last season’s remarkable run to the final, including their semi-final classic against Barcelona, Inter Milan remain a dark horse for this year’s competition. They were more than convincing in their recent 2-0 away win to Borussia Dortmund, and although they lost three Champions League games on the trot to Liverpool, Arsenal, and Atletico Madrid, they far from disgraced themselves and were unlucky not to make the top eight. 

Star Power in Martinez

Lautaro Martinez continues to live up to his billing as one of the best footballers in the world. Interestingly, he has scored the same number of Champions League goals as Bodo/Glimt’s Jens Petter Hague, and it has been business as usual for the Argentine. He has the Serie A Golden Boot all sewn up, six goals ahead of his nearest contender, and is fourth in assists. 

Martinez continues to play some of the best football in his career, and it will be tough for Bodo/Glimt to keep him quiet over two legs. 

Out of Season

Bodo/Glimt’s season does not officially get underway until March, so they have been in the tricky patch of managing a never-ending season. Trying to strike a balance of getting pre-season work in, playing friendlies, and keeping things sharp while not burning out players is a tricky task to manage. It is hard to see them as anything but undercooked over two legs compared to a team that is on a roll. 

Dominant Stats

With 15 goals scored and seven goals against in their eight group stage games, Inter Milan had the second-best defence in the group stages. The close to 2:1 goals for to against ratio will have pleased manager Cristian Chivu, who is still in the process of asserting his own identity for this team. 

With Simone Inzaghi departing for Saudi Arabia during the summer, Chivu has wasted no time in settling in. A stingy defence and a team that has star power to grab a couple of goals means this could be a nightmare task for Bodo/Glimt. 

It is possible that Inter Milan have timed their run to perfection yet again and should not be written off as contenders. They look like an even better version of last year’s team and will want to keep the momentum rolling with a no-nonsense two-legged victory against Bodo/Glimt, while you can’t help but feel the never-ending season will catch up to the Norwegian club.
