We’re writing this one from a hotel room somewhere past Lancaster, where the WiFi is shared, the desk chair is actively working against us, and the roommate is putting up elite snoring numbers. Basic cable, questionable coffee, and on the drive in we had to dodge a horse-drawn carriage like we accidentally time-traveled.

It’s a different pace out here. Slower. Simpler.

And earlier today, we took the scratch team lead at the tournament.

Not because of my elite talent.

Let’s be clear about that upfront. I was absolutely the weak link in this operation. The guy you’re hoping can just keep it on the lane and not light the whole thing on fire. But sometimes, that’s enough. Sometimes the job isn’t to carry the squad…it’s to recognize who can, hitch your wagon to them, and stay out of the way while they go to work.

Which, as it turns out, is a pretty solid blueprint for the Jack Link’s 500 at Talladega Superspeedway.

This is superspeedway racing. You don’t just show up with the fastest car and drive away from the field. You survive by working together. Drafting. Linking up with teammates. Finding a line, pushing it forward, and making sure you’re not the one left hanging when it’s time to pit and get back up to speed.

It’s not about being the best driver in the best wagon out there.

It’s about knowing where you fit…and making that work.

Let’s do something uncomfortable.

Let’s fade Ryan Blaney.

Yes, on a drafting track. Yes, at Talladega. Yes, we understand what we’re signing up for. But when we actually dig into the 2025 and 2026 superspeedway data, his profile does not exactly justify the price tag.

Blaney is sitting on an 18.9 average finish in that sample, which ranks 15th. He is only 10th in time spent inside the top 15 at 49.9 percent of laps, and his 17.9 average running position also ranks 10th. That is fine. Respectable. But we are not here to bet respectable when the market keeps treating him like a weekly hammer.

On the other side, Tyler Reddick has not put a foot wrong in 2026, ripping off five wins in the first nine races. That is a better winning percentage than every team in the AL West. He also owns the best average finish on superspeedways at 8.9, the second-most time inside the top 15 at 59.6 percent of laps, and the second-best average running position at 14.0.

And let’s not pretend the car is not part of this. I don’t know what they’ve got under the hood, but it’s running on a fuel mixture somewhere between jet fuel and flubber. The thing has to be cheated up. At this point, we would rather have any type of ticket on Reddick than be standing on the tracks when the tiny ginger comes flying through.

We will double down on the angle with Austin Cindric at plus money. If we are fading Blaney, we might as well bring a teammate along for the ride. Cindric is a legitimate force on superspeedways. He leads laps, hangs in the front pack, and spends about the same amount of time inside the top 15 as Blaney.

More importantly, the model loves him this weekend. Who are we to turn our backs on the algorithm that brought us to the dance…or at least the model that keeps the lights on in SpeedwaySteve2 HQ?

Uncomfortable. Yes.

Profitable. That is the idea.
