The Buffalo Sabres have the Boston Bruins on the brink of elimination, as they hold a 3-1 series stranglehold on their Atlantic Division rivals. Game 5 goes Tuesday night at 7:30 PM ET / 4:30 PM PT, with the Bruins scratching and clawing to get back into it. Coverage is on TNT/truTV/HBO Max in the United States and Sportsnet in Canada.
Online sportsbooks are strongly favoring the Sabres to dispatch of Boston in the NHL odds at a -170 line.. Below is my favorite Bruins vs Sabres Game 5 prediction, along with the latest odds for this duel between hated adversaries.
Bruins vs Sabres Game 5 Prediction and Pick
- Sabres Puckline (+158 at Caesars)
My prediction is that the Sabres will oust Boston from the postseason tonight, and that they’ll win by multiple goals. That scenario will perhaps play out as Boston pulls their goalie a bit earlier than normal in a desperate attempt to notch up the game, should they be trailing late.
Buffalo has won two straight by multiple goals in this series (3-1, 6-1), and have taken four of six overall vs their rivals. Of the Sabres last eight victories against the Bruins, six have been by at least a pair of markers.
Admittedly I was skeptical that career journeyman Alex Lyon could answer the bell after he came in for a pulled Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen in Game 2. However, Lyon has stolen the crease, allowing just one goal in back-to-back starts for a scintillating .959 save %. His strong play is definitely another reason why I feel Buffalo will win by multiple goals.
Dating back to the regular season, Boston has won just three times in their last eleven affairs. I’m confident the Sabres will get it done in front of a raucous home crowd in this contest.

Buffalo is the heavy -170 favorite on the moneyline to close out this series in five games. Our SBD formula ever so slightly favors the home unit, 3.54-3.38. Buffalo is the fifth choice in the Stanley Cup odds at +1100, while Boston is the longest shot well behind at +20000.
The Sabres are the third favorite among Eastern Conference teams in the NHL Playoff Bracket.
Bruins vs Sabres Prop Picks
- Bowen Byram Over 0.5 Points (+130 at DraftKings)
For a prop bet, I’m going to double down on my Game 4 prediction that worked out and select Sabres defenseman Bowen Byram to record a point in Game 5. In the first four battles of this series, he has five points, with all of them coming in the last three outings (two goals, three assists).
His five points are tied for second among blueliners this postseason and also T-2nd in Sabres team scoring. I particularly love getting him at plus money for this prop bet. If you’d like to wager on him getting at least one point and Buffalo winning by two or more goals, that same-game parlay payout is +315.
