The stakes couldn’t be higher tonight as the Orlando Magic prepare to host the Detroit Pistons for a pivotal Game 6 in the First Round of the Eastern Conference playoffs. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 PM ET at the Kia Center, with the postseason action broadcast on Amazon Prime Video in the States, and Sportsnet in Canada.

Down 3-2 in the series, Detroit finds themselves in a do-or-die spot once again. Online sportsbooks like their chances to stave off elimination, pegging the Pistons as 3.5-point favorites in the NBA odds. The road favorite will lean heavily on the explosive offensive capabilities of Cade Cunningham to force a Game 7, while Orlando will counter with their own elite playmaker, Paolo Banchero, who has been a usage monster and a matchup nightmare throughout the series.

My favorite bet tonight is Magic +3.5. Orlando is a dominant 6-1 against the spread at home as an underdog over their last seven games. Furthermore, they have historically figured out how to neutralize Detroit’s attack, boasting a 5-1 ATS record against them over their last six head-to-head matchups.

Conversely, Detroit has struggled to cover in hostile territory. They are an abysmal 1-3 ATS on the road against opponents with a winning record over their last four games. Backing Banchero and the home squad to keep this within 4 points is the most valuable angle on the slate.

Pistons vs Magic Playoff Stats

On paper, this is a quintessential rock fight. Both squads boast elite top-three Defensive Ratings. However, the most glaring discrepancy lies behind the three-point line. Detroit is the worst three-point shooting team in the playoffs, converting a dreadful 29.1% from deep. To compensate, they bully their way to extra possessions, grabbing 51.8% of available rebounds.

Conversely, Orlando is far more capable from beyond the arc, hitting 34.3% of their threes. Orlando also takes much better care of the basketball. Detroit’s 1-to-1 Assist-to-Turnover ratio ranks dead last, resulting in sloppy possessions.

One counterintuitive metric is the Pace. Both teams operate at over 100 possessions per 48 minutes — Orlando at 101.4 and Detroit at 100.8. This volume is exactly why the Over 210.5 is my recommended total play; getting up and down the court provides ample opportunity to score, even with inefficient half court offense.

The Over has hit in 13 of Detroit’s last 20 games as a favorite, a robust 65.0% success rate. With Detroit playing desperate, offensive-minded basketball and Orlando matching their pace, expect the scoreboard to tick past this modest number.
