  • The Cleveland Guardians are road favorites over the Detroit Tigers Tuesday, May 19th
  • The starting pitching matchup features Parker Messick up against Keider Montero
  • See my prediction and analysis for a Guardians squad that’s won six of their last eight regular season meetings with Detroit

The Cleveland Guardians (27-22) continue their road series against the Detroit Tigers (20-28) at Comerica Park Tuesday evening. First pitch is scheduled for 6:40 PM ET / 3:40 PM PT and the MLB odds shows that the road squad is the favorite in this one.

The Guardians decisively won the previous matchup 8-2, backing the pitching staff with nine hits and playing error-free defense in their first meeting since Detroit dispatched Cleveland in the AL Wild Card last season. Continue reading for my preview and favorite bet for tonight’s contest.

Guardians vs Tigers Predictions & Picks

  • Guardians vs Tigers Pick: Guardians ML (-165 at Caesars)

Cleveland holds a distinct advantage that makes them my preferred moneyline pick. Left-hander Parker Messick takes the mound, bringing a stellar 2.35 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP across 53.2 innings of work.

The Tigers will counter with Keider Montero. He’s been solid with a 3.65 ERA and a 0.99 WHIP in 44.1 innings, but he lacks the overpowering swing-and-miss stuff of his counterpart.

Messick has been sitting down batters consistently all season, registering 9.73 strikeouts per nine innings while Montero averages just 6.29 K/9.

Starting Pitcher Matchup

The MLB probable pitchers are Parker Messick (CLE) vs Keider Montero (DET). Both pitchers have excelled at limiting baserunners, but Messick has the upper hand.

Messick enters this matchup in tremendous form. Over his last nine starts, the southpaw is 5-1 while keeping opponents completely off-balance. His 2.35 ERA is supported by a 2.98 FIP.

Montero has been a tough-luck loser for the Tigers. Despite a 2-3 record, he holds a slight edge over Messick in walk suppression, yielding just 2.03 walks per nine innings.

However, Montero’s lack of strikeout upside means his defense has to do much more heavy lifting when the ball is put in play.

Cleveland brings a top-10 road offense to Comerica Park, averaging 4.62 runs per game. A massive part of their success stems from aggression on the basepaths, stealing 1.08 bases per road game.

Cleveland has been surging, taking nine of twelve battles. Detroit has struggled significantly, going just 5-12 as an underdog on the campaign. The Tigers enter this matchup mired in a deep slump, posting a 2-11 straight-up record over their last 13 outings.
