The stakes are massive at Court Philippe Chatrier as Jakub Mensik clashes with Joao Fonseca in the French Open men’s singles quarterfinals. Scheduled for 1:15 pm ET on Tuesday, June 2, the winner of 19-year-old Fonseca vs 20-year-old Mensik will advance to his first Grand Slam semifinal.

The Kalshi markets establish Fonseca as a clear favorite at 66¢ (equal to -194 odds), but exploiting stylistic matchups and situational trends within the spread and total markets is where I find a definitive betting edge.

I’m not prepared to take Mensik to win the match outright, but I do expect him to keep the total games within five. The Czech 26-seed has been battle-tested throughout this tournament, surviving five sets against Mariano Navone (6-3, 2-6, 6-4, 1-6, 7-6) in the second round, rallying from 0-6 down in the first set to topple 8-seed Alex de Minaur (0-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-3), and grinding out another five-setter against 11-seed Andrey Rublev (6-3, 7-6, 4-6, 2-6, 6-3) in the fourth round.

His serve has been a weapon when he needs it most – 13 aces against Rublev with a 75% first-serve win rate, and a scorching 90% first-serve win rate in the opening round.

Mensik’s game margins tell the story of a fighter: he had just a on-game edge against Rublev (25-24) and actually lost the raw game count against Navone (22-25) despite winning the match.

Fonseca’s own winning margins this tournament (+7, +7, +3, and +5) show that only two of his four matches would have covered a -4.5 spread.

At 55¢ (or -122 odds), the Kalshi market undervalues Mensik’s proven five-set resilience and potent first serve.

Total-Games Pick: Over 36.5 -117 (54¢ at Kalshi)

The game counts from this tournament strongly favor the over. Mensik’s matches have produced 27, 47, 31, and 49 total games – averaging 38.5 per match – while Fonseca’s contests have yielded 31, 43, 53, and 45 total games for a 43.0-game average. Three of Mensik’s four matches and three of Fonseca’s four matches have cleared this 36.5 threshold.

Their first encounter at the 2024 Next Gen ATP Finals was an absolute marathon that required all five sets to settle. With Grand Slam quarterfinal pressure amplifying the importance of every service game, neither competitor will surrender consecutive breaks easily on the clay.

Fonseca has posted a remarkably consistent 72% first-serve win rate across the tournament while committing just three total double faults in four matches. Mensik’s 75% first-serve win rate against Rublev suggests both will hold serve at high rates, leading to extended sets.

Both players have also demonstrated a willingness to fight back from deficits – Fonseca rallied from two sets down against both Dino Prižmić and Novak Djokovic, while Mensik survived two five-setters.

That scrappy resilience from both sides points to a match that extends well beyond 36.5 total games. At -117, I’m buying “Yes” on the over at Kalshi.

Mensik and Fonseca have only played one time, and it was under alternate rules at the Next Gen ATP Finals. That back-and-forth battle went the distance under the fast-paced scoring format.
