Texas Tech got the news it was waiting on Monday morning. A Texas judge granted Brendan Sorsby a temporary injunction against the NCAA, clearing him to play for the Red Raiders this fall.

Sorsby had been ruled permanently ineligible after the NCAA found roughly $90,000 in bets across his career, including 40 wagers on Indiana football in 2022 when he was a Hoosier. Once he was cleared, the sportsbooks didn’t waste any time adjusting.

Here’s what the ruling does to the Red Raiders’ win total, and where I land on it.

Now that Sorsby’s cleared, BetMGM has its line back at 11.5 in the college football win totals. At -200, the under implies right around a 67% chance the Red Raiders finish shy of 12 regular-season wins.

That’s a quick round trip. The number opened at 11.5 in the spring, dropped to 10.5 once the gambling news broke, and climbed right back once he was reinstated.

FanDuel’s still catching up. The book held at 10.5 but slapped a -300 price (75%) on the over, a sign the bump back to 11.5 is coming.

There’s still a catch. Sorsby serves a two-game suspension to open the year, sitting the home opener against Abilene Christian and the road trip to Oregon State. He returns for the Big 12 opener against Houston on September 18.

The futures board moved too. BetMGM lists the Red Raiders at -135 in the Big 12 title odds, well ahead of the rest of the field.

Tech is also -300 to reach the College Football Playoff, a price that only holds up with Sorsby behind center. He even pops up at +2000 in the Heisman odds.

The books have plenty of reason to back him. Sorsby was ESPN’s No. 1 transfer quarterback in this cycle, and Texas Tech handed him a deal worth more than $4 million to headline its title defense.

Here’s where I come down. Getting Sorsby back is a big deal for Tech, but 11.5 is a tough number to chase.

The Red Raiders play 12 regular-season games, so the over is really a bet on a perfect regular season. This program has never run the table, and now it opens the year without its starting QB for two weeks.

Yes, the schedule is soft. Abilene Christian and Sam Houston are gimmes, and Tech dodges both Utah and BYU all year long.

But that Week 2 trip to Oregon State with a backup under center is a real trap, and the Beavers won’t roll over. Kirk Francis or a healing Will Hammond (torn ACL) for two games is a different team than the one Sorsby leads.

One more thing to factor in: this is a temporary injunction, and the NCAA plans to appeal. There’s still some legal risk hanging over the season.

I’ll happily back Texas Tech to win the Big 12 and make the playoff. I just won’t pay for perfection when they’re shorthanded out of the gate.
