The Hungaroring is often described as Monaco without the walls. It features the same slow corners, limited passing opportunities and constant demand for mechanical grip, but drivers can make one mistake without immediately delivering several million dollars of carbon fiber to a yacht.

The comparison is especially relevant this weekend because Ferrari was excellent at Monaco. Lewis Hamilton finished second there, Charles Leclerc joined him near the front, and the Scuderia demonstrated the low-speed strength required to succeed on a circuit with relatively little emphasis on straight-line power.

Ferrari has carried that performance into Hungary.

Leclerc led FP1 before Hamilton headed a Ferrari one-two in FP2. Hamilton remained second in FP3 and missed pole position by only 0.012 seconds. His subsequent three-place penalty promotes Leclerc to second and Oscar Piastri to third.

Mercedes has not been able to make its straight-line advantage particularly useful at a circuit that gives drivers few opportunities to fully deploy it. George Russell finished fifth in FP1, fifth in FP2 and sixth in FP3 before qualifying seventh while battling a water leak. Kimi Antonelli showed more speed Saturday, but his grid penalty moved him back to seventh and made his enormous DraftKings salary even more difficult to justify.

For this $20 DraftKings contest with $10,000 awarded to first place, we are building around Ferrari’s apparent performance advantage. Our expected race has Leclerc taking the lead early, whether that happens into Turn 1, later on the opening lap or through the first pit sequence.

This gives the prediction a little breathing room. There is no reason to light our lineup on fire before the drivers have completed their first cup of gasoline.

Hungarian Grand Prix F1 DFS Picks

Charles Leclerc, Ferrari ($12,000) – Start: 3rd

Charles Leclerc is the centerpiece of the lineup and our pick to win the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Leclerc led FP1, finished second in FP2 and remained near the front in FP3 before qualifying third. Hamilton’s penalty promotes him to second alongside Norris. The model projects Leclerc to finish 2.90, one of the strongest expected results in the field.

We believe Ferrari has the superior race car.

The Scuderia’s performance at Monaco suggested its low-speed grip and mechanical balance would translate to the similarly technical Hungaroring. Ferrari has confirmed that expectation throughout the weekend, leading both Friday sessions and placing both cars within 0.238 seconds of pole.

Our preferred scenario has Leclerc beating Norris into Turn 1. However, the lineup does not immediately turn into a decorative coaster if Norris leads the opening lap. Leclerc can take control later in the first stint, use Ferrari’s tire management to create an opportunity or move ahead during the first round of pit stops.

The important prediction is that Leclerc captures the lead early enough to accumulate a substantial collection of dominator points and does not give it back.

Leclerc is also strongly positioned to earn the teammate bonus. He starts three places ahead of Hamilton and carries a 2.90 projected finish compared to Hamilton’s 4.33.

We are not paying $12,000 for a safe podium. We are paying for a victory, the teammate bonus and enough laps led to make the DraftKings scoring page begin smoking.

Oscar Piastri, McLaren ($8,000) – Start: 5th

Oscar Piastri becomes the better value from the McLaren garage if our Leclerc prediction is correct.

Norris starts from pole and costs $9,000. That salary is attractive if he wins and controls the afternoon, but our lineup is built around Leclerc taking the lead early. Once Norris loses access to the majority of the dominator points, the scoring difference between the McLaren drivers becomes much smaller.

Piastri offers similar finishing upside for $1,000 less.

He starts third after the grid penalties and is projected to finish 4.10. His final qualifying attempt was also compromised by Hamilton, preventing him from showing everything available in the McLaren. The team installed its updated floor on both cars Saturday after Piastri used Friday to assist with a cross-car comparison.

Piastri can challenge for the podium, remain close to Norris and potentially beat his teammate through strategy. He does not need to lead a significant portion of the race to justify an $8,000 salary.

If Leclerc takes the dominator points away from Norris, paying the discount for Piastri becomes the cleaner decision. We still receive exposure to McLaren’s speed without purchasing the expensive parking spot at the front of the grid.

Hungarian Grand Prix DFS Strategy: Teammate Bonus Value Plays

Liam Lawson, Racing Bulls ($6,000) – Start: 11th

Liam Lawson gives us two realistic routes to DraftKings production.

The first is place differential. Lawson starts 11th and is projected to finish 9.88. A move into the top 10 would provide positive differential, additional finishing points and access to any positions surrendered by cars near the front.

The second is the teammate bonus.

Lawson and Arvid Lindblad have essentially equal cars this weekend. Lindblad starts ninth, but Lawson has been the more consistent driver across practice, finishing 10th in FP1, seventh in FP2 and ninth in FP3. Lindblad completed only six laps in final practice after a power-unit change kept him in the garage for most of the session.

The model projects Lawson at 9.88 and Lindblad at 10.17, separating the teammates by less than one-third of a position. Lawson starts two spots farther back, which gives him more room to earn place-differential points while remaining within a stone’s throw of beating Lindblad.

Lindblad has the better starting position. Lawson has more ways to score. We will take the latter and hope Racing Bulls does not turn the strategy meeting into an escape room.

Esteban Ocon, Haas (Captain) ($5,700) – Start: 15th

Esteban Ocon is not in the captain position because we expect him to storm through the field and challenge for a podium. If that happens, we will delete this paragraph and claim we saw it coming all week.

This is a salary-allocation play. Ocon costs only $5,700 with the captain multiplier, allowing us to roster Leclerc, Piastri and Ferrari without filling the remaining positions with cars that may need directions to find the rest of the field.

Ocon starts 15th and has been better than Haas teammate Oliver Bearman throughout the weekend. He finished 12th in FP1 and FP2, beating Bearman in both sessions, before qualifying two positions ahead of him. The model also projects Ocon to finish 15.21 compared to Bearman’s 15.67.

That gives Ocon a realistic route to the teammate bonus. He also has a chance to gain positions against several vulnerable cars around him, especially if strategy or reliability rearranges the back half of the field.

We need Ocon to stay clean, beat Bearman and collect whatever place differential becomes available. The captain multiplier enhances each part of that production, while his microscopic salary makes the rest of the lineup possible.

He does not need to perform a magic trick. Finishing the race with all four wheels attached will be a wonderful opening bid.

Nico Hulkenberg, Audi ($4,400) – Start: 10th

Nico Hulkenberg is the lineup’s strongest salary-saving option.

He finished eighth in FP1, ninth in FP2 and 10th in FP3 before securing the 10th starting position. The model projects him to finish 11th, keeping him near the points and well within range of returning value at only $4,400.

The faster cars are already starting ahead of Hulkenberg. He does not have to spend Sunday staring into his mirrors while Hamilton, Antonelli and Russell arrive like guests who were late to dinner. His competition consists primarily of Lawson, Gasly, Colapinto and the rest of the midfield.

Hulkenberg has also been far better than Audi teammate Gabriel Bortoleto throughout the weekend. Bortoleto starts 14th and carries an average projected finish of 12.24, while Hulkenberg is projected at 11.00.

The teammate bonus is therefore an important part of Hulkenberg’s value. He is the faster Audi, starts four positions ahead of Bortoleto and somehow costs less. DraftKings has apparently priced the two drivers using a dartboard, and we are happy to take advantage.

Even if Hulkenberg loses one position, beating Bortoleto and finishing around 11th would provide a strong return.

Ferrari Constructor and Final Analysis

Ferrari Constructor ($13,500) – Start: 2nd

Ferrari is expensive, but it is also the selection most closely tied to our expected race winner.

Leclerc starts second and Hamilton fifth. Both drivers have demonstrated front-running speed throughout the weekend, with Ferrari leading FP1 and FP2 before Hamilton missed pole by only 0.012 seconds.

Leclerc supplies the victory and dominator upside. Hamilton provides a second car capable of finishing near the front while earning positive place differential from fifth. The model projects Hamilton to finish 4.33, giving Ferrari an excellent opportunity to place both cars inside the top five.

Ferrari’s performance at Monaco strengthens the argument. Its car excelled at the closest stylistic comparison on the calendar and has again looked comfortable through Hungary’s slow and medium-speed corners.

If Leclerc reaches the lead during the opening portion of the race and Hamilton moves forward behind him, Ferrari can combine a victory with two top-five finishes. That provides the constructor ceiling required to justify its $13,500 salary.

It is a substantial investment, but at least this Ferrari appears to work on Sundays. That already makes it more practical than most Ferraris available to the general public.

Final Analysis

This is not a group of six unrelated selections held together with duct tape and positive thinking. Each value driver has multiple scoring paths, and every dollar saved allows us to concentrate the lineup around Leclerc and Ferrari.

If Chuck captures the lead into Turn 1 or shortly thereafter, the entire construction comes alive. If he waits until the first pit cycle, we promise not to throw the television into the yard.
